If England and Germany win their groups, that could only be in the final. I think England will make it around farther than last time before they get beat by Brasil again. Germany should make it the the QF. At that point, it will be even bets for the last three games.

I think Vertical Horizon is right. Nothing they do will surprise me. They do have a huge advantage as hosts and will probably use that to go far. But I also voted that they'd only get to the 2nd round.
Anything can happen in this sport.

Germany is strong in tournaments, we saw that again last year during the Confed Cup.
In addition we have a much better team than in 2002 and we'll play at home!
I'd say quarterfinal for sure but I certainly hope for the final!!!

2nd round at the very minamum, winners at best, Quater finals or semi finals if want my honest opinion. You're normally strong at tournements.

Germany CAN be strong in tournaments but what about it's pitiful performance in the last European Cup?

Germany would have to be even poorer than they are to not make it out of that group. I think they'll lose to either England or Sweden in the second round, though.

Against England it could be tough, but not impossible. But against Sweden, Germany will be the favourites. Sweden recently lost 3-0 to Ireland. They are by no means a stronger side than Germany. The real test will come in the quarters against Holland or Argentina. I expect both of them to win against whoever finished 1-2 from group D. Either of these 2 teams will be very exhausted, and possibly with many cards, as they will have to play all tough games. Germany on the other hand will be relatively fresher, comming from an easier group. Add that to the home advantage, and the upswing in morale at reaching the quarters, and you have all factors favouring another German appearance in the semis.

You make a good point regarding freshness. Germany should not have to struggle too much in the group, and may even be able to rest some players in the final group match while other teams will have to fight much harder.
I still think Sweden can beat Germany (we can agree to disagree here), but don't underestimate the chances of England and Germany meeting the second round.
'Picking' your second round opponent is notoriously difficult, and it is not hard to imagine scenerios in which Germany or Enland finish second (England overlooks Paraguay and drops points, Germany is through to the second round after two games and lets up against Ecuador). Stranger things have happened.
Just imagine Germany-England in Munich. Good God.

Ok...good, most of us are realistic and voted for second round.
Germany is strong in tournaments but they've never been in the position before that they are now so I don't think that matters much and home advantage won't help much when we get out of our group and have to face the heavy hitters.
As tough as that is to say...

The idea that 'Germany is strong in tournaments' strikes me as one of those things that gets said so often that people have come to take it as fact.
This ignores the talent previous German teams had.
It also ignores what happened two years ago.
And besides, we can say things like this, or that England never win penalty shootouts, or that Brazil cannot win in Europe (although they did once), or that anyone other than Brazil cannot win outside of Europe, but all of these 'rules' are irrelevant.
If we assess the talent and form of the competing teams, Brazil are the favourites and Germany are in bad shape, even if there is a penalty shootout against England, irrespective of the 'rules' we have all convinced ourselves of.
