Germany's biggest rivalry?

In terms of football it is the final 1974 where the dutch still belive that they had the better team and it is still a big issue and problem for holland.

They actually had, but they ********ed it up by playing like if they had already won...

Other things are the history and the fact that germany is the big neighbour and for a small and unimportant country like the netherlands it is a great thing to beat the big neighbour in the east.

Playing arrogant is not a good idea against a german team i would agree here and wherther the dutch team was beter or not is a useless discussion. Germany won the WC and deserved it (more or less).
A good question would be why germany is so successfull in football while other nations always have the better players and are the better teams ( at least in their impression).

I love the dutch north sea cost but also the comlete country because it is not far away form my hoemtown and i would even agree that dutch teams often play better ( at least more attractive football) but you have to agree that the 1974 final (different to the lost 1978 WC final) is still a more or less huge topic in your country. We all could see the dutch special relations with germany at the Euro 1988 and the WC 1990. I don´t think you could find examples of german players behaving like that. So there must be reasons and if it is not the fact that germany is the big neighbour than there must be others who knows.

Well, for me it isn't. I saw a documentary about that final a while ago and Holland was clearly the better team throughout the whole tourney. They were just so stupid to act like if they had already won the final before it was even finished! It's mostly the war I guess. Size doesn't matter. Well, maybe for women but in terms of land, it doesn't :D

well in 1974 I was not here yet, I was not born that time...but I also saw the finale on DVD...yes dutch was better team during whole tournament, but in the most important game in the FINALE we were better....it is not important to be only better, but to make more goals and to win finale:)...as we did!

in 2002 we ended second in the world cup...and we also did not play very good..but we made enough goals and we played in Finale....we know how to make it to advance especially in most important matches

so maybe if we meet in the world cup in Germany again, you will play better again, but we will win:)....

I would love to see Holland-Germany finale again (is that possible??)

sometimes it does not matter if you are better, how many chances you have, but how many goals you really do:)

look at Greece-Czech game in European Cup 2004...I think Czechs were favorite...and look Greece won..

anything is possible.

and If we play against Holland in Germany, we will win again:)...we have homeland advantage...very huge one

I have many friends in Germany who love, love, love the USA and England. Especially the older folks who lived through the war and saw their country ruined and then raised back up to be an economic giant.


US yes, England no. The English army officers behaved like arrogant pricks (well, they were) in the years after the war. My father knows lots of stories (he was a boy back then) about arrogant English behaviour with regards to the German population. And not only the older Germans, the younger kids were treated like crap by them as well. Totally different to the Americans, who were really liked by everyone (by and large). For example, in the English zone, for some years in school, it was ordered by the English command that no German music was allowed to be played (Beethoven etc.), but only English composers like Benjamin Britten, and every German man had to take of his hat when he passed an English soldier. You didn't get that kind of stuff from the US Army.

Just to put it into perspective. In the above post it sounded as if Americans and the English were by and large the same kind of people - they weren't!
