Couldn't find a thread on this (http://www.smh.com.au/news/film/simpsons-movie-its-coming/2006/04/04/1143916493329.html) anywhere:

The long-awaited feature film starring Homer, Bart and the rest of the zany cast will hit US screens on July 27, 2007, the studio said.

The studio revealed the news with a surprise sneak trailer tagged onto copies of the movie Ice Age: The Meltdown, which opened in the US at the weekend.
Thoughts? I can't see this ending any way except for in tears.

i concur... i want to believe that it will be fantastic... i will go see it... however, i am worried that the 30 minute format will not translate into the feature length, and thus ruin the long success of the show...

I can only secretly suspect that this movie was made for the express pupose of killing off the show. if they'd wanted a movie to be a success they would have made it when people were still wearing "Don't Have a Cow, Man" t-shirts.

Either way, i will definitely see it.

This would have been great news 10 years ago.

As it is, each year The Simpsons hangs on it tarnishes its legacy just a little bit. I still watch the show but it is more out of loyalty than laughs.

I always thought I'd be excited about this news. but like Zico3Kbattery said, I would've cared 10 years ago. I stopped watching the new shows in 2000 after that season completely turned me off the show. and I was a diehard.

gotta say that based on the recent track record (I catch one or two new shows a year) ... they're not getting my $8.50. :(

I am a scared as a certified Simpson's nutjob, that this movie will suck donkeyballs.

I agree with Ringo - its 10 years too late. Maybe if they just can slap together some scenes from Season 7 and 8 and make into a 90 min slapstick affair - it may have my attention.

Now a Futurama movie. That could seriously work, sometimes you just wished that Fry and the gang would carry on their space escapades for a bit longer.

The erosion in quality has probably gone on longer than the show's actual glory days.

I haven't watched it in seven or eight years. I remember finding it less and less funny, but tnce they aired the "Homer is a hippie" and "Principal Skinner is actually an imposter" episodes, it was clear that there was no point in following it anymore.

A bad idea to make a film of a show that jumped the shark many years ago. Why not go the whole hog and make a Baywatch film with the original cast, or a Happy Days film ?. The Simpsons suck in a collosal fashion, and Futurama was far better.

My excitement of this movie can only be summed up by the fact that i skipped the trailer and went right to the Diora Bairds boobs link instead.

I share your opinion. Glory years (which were as good as any TV show has ever been) are really seasons 3-8 (6 years). Considering they are now on Season 17??, they have really gone on far longer than anyone expected. There are still moments of brilliance, but I confess that even as a Simpsons diehard who rocked the trivia games a couple of years back, I haven't watched more than two full episodes in the past 5 seasons. Not for lack of love for the show, but the Simpsons just isn't essential anymore.

If I was to make a time capsule of the 90's, I'd just toss Simpsons Seasons 3-8 on DVD in the capsule and lock it up. The show really was that all-encompassing, but it's time is past. Unless they can keep the gags and riffs running for 90 minutes, I don't see how this movie will be a success.

Sigh, I'll still probably go and see it in the theaters out of a sense of loyalty.

Sadly, the studio's probably counting on a lot of people like you...

Disagree. Homer on medical marijuana was one of the funniest shows in the canon.

(Was that the one you meant by Homer becoming a hippie? I haven't seen many shows recently because they suck so much.)

j...and Futurama was far better.

Maybe in recent memory, but there's not a chance in hell that any Futurama beats the first four or five seasons of The Simpsons.

I've seen the old episodes of the Simpsons too many times to find them as funny, as a whole, as I used to. Certain parts are still brilliant. Overexposure has dulled the rest to me.

Simpsons suck now. Ive watched a few of the new episodes over the last 5 years and find them idiotic, totally pointless and a waste of time. I think after the year 2000 they went way downhill. They really did ruin it.

Kind of like the "I didn't do it" Bart. The Simpsons foretold their own demise.

Maybe they are thinking the new format will somehow freshen up the show overall, but I can't see how they could take a 90 minute version of the Simpsons TV show and call that a movie. For it to be a success (not necessarily financially, but as a movie) it has to make a serious break from the typical rhythms and gags normally associated with the Simpsons.

It all depends on who's writing it. The current show has different writers that they did when they were the best show on TV.
