Unlike a lot of USA fans, I do cheer for the Mexican National Team (MNT) in the World Cup and other international competitions (but never when they are playing the US). It is just CONCACAF pride. To me, it is kind of like fighting with your brother - you want to kick his, well whatever, but at the same time you want him to be OK if he fights someone else. OK - given that, it still bothers me that US companies support the MNT as a form of adverstising while not supporting the USMNT.

For example, Doritos had bags of chips with the MNT all over them a while back - and I never saw any w/ the USMNT. OK, fine. Just today, I logged on to mycokerewards.com and Coke has a promotion where you can win tix to the World Cup - and this is what is says:

Register now to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to 2006 World Cup in Germany. You could even win Mexican Team National game gear like jerseys, hats, soccer balls and more, only from mycokerewards.com.

Hey - how about USMNT stuff too?

They can't really control the US softdrink market via soccer marketing.

Pepsi (via Sierra Mist) is a US Soccer sponsor. Coke can't do US Soccer promotions.

This is something we're just going to have to get used to. American advertisers realize one way to get the attention of the Mexican-American community is to use the Mexican National Team. I mean, come on, they play a lot of their friendlies in the US for a reason. Money, Money, Money, Money. Mexicans living in the US shell out some cash to see their team, and advertisers want to catch 'em too.

I always make sure to e-mail sponsors and let them know that I thank them for supporting soccer in the USA (MLS and US Soccer) and that I support their products because of it.. Well, except for the car manufacturers...;)

Yeah but if youve been into Mexico you also realize Coca Cola runs the country. The shit is plastered everywhere... walls, billboards, basketball courts... etc

MNCs have no allegiance to nations. They have two priorities in order of importance:
(1) preserve the wealth and status of elite executives within the organization;
(2) keep shareholders happy.

Frito-Lay doesn't give a shit about either the MNT or the USNT. They just want eyeballs. There are more Mexicans willing to buy a bag of junk with Borgetti's face on it. If LD was on a bag of Doritos, most America's would assume that he was the most recent American Idol winner.

I hope you know that when you sign up if specifically states, " . Eligibility:
Mexican National Team Sweeps, You Could Win a Trip to the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ -- same comment as above (the “Sweepstakes”) is open only to residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia who are eighteen (18) years of age or older at the time of entry." :mad:

I hope some US supporter wins this damn thing and burns the Mexican jersey and pimps Pepsi when winning the trip. What is a resident of the US? This pisses me off big time.. sorry for the rant.

we now interrupt our regularly scheduled program to hear an idiot threaten someone else over the internet. watch as he puffs up with his own feeling of self importance, alone, at home. that will soon fade. we now return to our regularly scheduled program.
