D.C. United’s ‘United Drives’ enters sixth season

The program will officially kickoff at Sunday’s home-opener versus the New York Red Bulls (April 2 at 5:00 p.m., RFK Stadium), as new children’s books will be collected during the entire month of April.

At all D.C. United home games, the United Drives booth will be located outside of RFK Stadium’s Gate A and will open two hours prior to kickoff, closing 15 minutes into the first half. Any fan who donates an item will receive, as a thank you from the club, a “Buy One, Get One Free” ticket voucher good for any D.C. United regular season home game as well as a United promotional item. The full collection schedule can be found below.

To start the program, D.C. United will begin with a collection of new children’s books to benefit United for D.C. and its program, United Reads. United Drives hopes to collect hundreds of brand new books for youth in Kindergarten through 7th grade. All books will go to over 1,500 youth at the four elementary schools that participate in United Reads: Payne Elementary (Ward 6), Smothers Elementary (Ward 7), Howard Road Academy (Ward 8) and Birney Elementary (Ward 8).

Do they have to be new? I have two huge storage bins full of like new books sitting in by basement, not that I can even lift one of them and carry it across the parking lot, but I could bring some of them.

To be honest, I think like new/gently used would be fine (it's not like they're requiring proof of purchase). I think they're just trying to prevent people from dropping off books that are in really bad shape and should be thrown out. If you have a lot of books you could probably arrange to drop off at DCU at another time so you could park in lot 5 and have someone from DCU help you carry them in (contact Catherine).

I will give you a call next week. I can most likely bring them out mid April if that's not too late.

I worked the donation booth a few times and gently used books are fine.
