Erpen replaced Boswell in central defense late last season, stunting the rookie's progress. In Nowak's preferred three-man back line, there wasn't enough room for two players who are most comfortable in the middle.
But after Boswell got invited to U.S. national team camp in January, the team knew it had to find a way to get both players on the field. Although Nowak has declined to discuss Sunday's starting lineup, it appears he's ready to switch to four defenders and play Boswell and Erpen side by side.
Bring on the 4-4-2!!!!!!

What is this based on? Others who have seen the team practice/play live this pre-season can certainly provide a more grounded perspective than I can, but I haven't heard anything or seen anything in the pre-season broadcasts that looked like a 4-4-2 was in the works. Wouldn't they be using it in the preseason if they were going to use it during the year?

They played 4 in the back against RSL in Bradenton and then again in Spain.

The game in Spain was a indication. Gros was on the right side of the defense. He was kinda skewed forward......very reminicent of when Reyes played for Hudson.
The problem was on the left where Wilson and Adu couldn't get it together and figure out that someone ought to concentrate on defensive duties. Hopefully that's been worked out by clubbing Wilson on the head when ever he overlaps Freddy or by putting in Prideaux.

And that was to an A-League team. When Wilson was in there against the Clash, that's the only time they put any real offense together.

Lonnie's right. Wilson IS the weakest link. In Bradenton Cunningham made him look silly. Couple that with Perkins tripping over his own feet and letting the ball roll thru his hands and it was like the Keystone Kops out there. :o

I definitely prefer a 442 over a 352.
It seems we have the personnel to switch this season.

So our midfield then becomes Gomez, Quaranta, Adu and Olsen?
With Moreno and Fenomeno up front?
That's a lot of traffic down the center of the field. We still need some true wing players, especially if Gros has to replace Namoff for a long time.

I prefer the 4-4-2 if only because I hate having to keep either Erpen or Boz on the bench.

I'm all for getting Boz and Erpen out there at the same time, but right now, I'm not thrilled with any of our options for the 3rd backliner in a 352, let alone finding 2 more to complete a 442.
Is it Sunday yet?

The way I see it, it's Adu on the left, and the 'traditional' midfield triangle of Gomez, Olsen, and BC. With no one on the right, that void is for Gros to fill when he can.
It's not a traditional 4-4-2, more of a 3.5-4.5-2

I still prefer our 3-5-2 with Gomez, Quaranta, Olsen, Adu, Caroll or Simms. thats a pretty solid midfield. The best in MLS I would say.

With 4 in the back the outside guys don't have to be pure defenders like the in a 3-man back line.
Did somebody say......

Stokes on the right + Gros on the left + Erpen & Boz in the Middle = a pretty adequate defense and a pretty potent attack.
Stokes Rules!

Sorry Jegao, but any defense with Stokes listed can hardly be called adequate :(
I think it'd be Wilson on the left and Gros on the right

Sounds like that's the way it's going.
Too bad. Stokes was looking pretty good going forward the last couple of times he got some PT.

I think I'd rather have Stokes than John "Can't hold me back" Wilson. At least when Stokes got beat, he was generally in the right position.
