It seems odd to me that Payne would be the one to work on selling the team - I would think AEG would do that directly. Often times a new team owner gets his own GM on board...wonder why we haven't heard anything from AEG directly. Doesn't give me confidence that much is actually going on.

Because DC United still belongs to AEG, Kevin Payne still works for AEG. Once he sells the team and becomes a partner in the new ownership he will be a seperate entity from AEG.

KP is going to be part of the new ownership group, at least that was the plan for the deal that fell through.

Seems like Goff was at the luncheon yesterday, or else had a "mole."

Nice to see Santino & Esky as options on Sunday.

True, he was part of the proposed ownership group, but if he has his own best interests at heart he can't very well also have his employer's best interests in mind. I personally don't see a problem, he has led DCU to become the best team and brand in the league and I hope he continues, it's just surprising to me that AEG doesn't seem to see the conflict, or they do and are working separately behind the scenes, which I'm worried will just delay things even further. The DC govt is moving forward to plan poplar point without a soccer stadium, and without a partnership with a new team owner and the group that owns the other land surrounding the site I see problems getting a stadium done. I'd hate to see them move to east bumf%^& VA, but it's looking more and more likely the longer this drags on.

Because AEG WANTS to sell and Payne WANTS to buy. Anshultz didn't become a zillionaire by giving the farm away.

Rimando-Get well soon, take your time though...don't rush back...you've done that a few times, and just re injure yourself. Hope the tests go well.

The DC govt is moving forward to plan poplar point without a soccer stadium ...

True, the AWC has asked for requests for proposals for a site development plan for Poplar Point. They specifically included an item about the feasibility of a soccer stadium for DC United. Apparently, based on the presentation given by KP at Ballou High School, United and Global already have a plan ready to submit.

What group owns the land surrounding the site? I thought the site was surrounded by highway.

The article said that we'd be picking up a keeper later this week.. probably someone already signed with MLS. Anybody have any idea who this could be?? DJ Countess?? Did he ever get signed?

Countess is now reportedly looking to Europe. I don't know if there were any GKs in the draft that signed, but weren't picked. Or if Clint Baumstark is still around. Or Andrew Terris. Neither are listed on a roster now.

Henry Ring? Wasn't that the keeper in Chicago a few years back, had 1/2 a good season?

Howard Road (ramp from 295 to S Capitol St) is all privately-owned land. Global apparently owns most of it, or so they said at the Anacostia community event they had a couple of weeks ago. This would be the entrance to the stadium site and would be the beginning of the "Main Street" encompassing the entire development. Their plans were pretty amazing, I'm surprised there hasn't been more publicity about it. Marrion Barry was there gushing over the plans and the development, he seemed to not care too much about soccer except as a means to an end (jobs, retail, housing, etc.)

But Payne doesn't have the $, he has to find people with it, and that means he's got a vested interest to drive down the price of the team (the less a buyer pays, the more $ KP gets), whereas AEG wants the highest price. I'm not shedding any tears if AEG misse out on a few million here or there, it's just not the way business is normally conducted. I wouldn't be shocked to see 6 months from now AEG announce a deal that they've done...Alexi didn't do the Red Bull deal, remember, that was straight through AEG's LA op center.

That's only true if you're cynical and think something shady is going on.

Isn't it possible that AEG has told KP that because of his strong ties to the league, they would like to give him first crack at putting together an ownership group, but only if he can do so at a pre-arranged price that they see as in their best interests?

Isn't it possible that they would do that, then seek outside buyers if KP can't get the deal done? Isn't it possible that they are rewarding loyalty to the league? Or does have to be cloak and dagger, someone is trying to screw someone else and everybody has something up their sleeve?

I guess I'm confused. While Global is not going to be the owner of United, Payne has said all along that they were still part of the development team for the entire site. That is a good thing, right?

Maybe it is cynical, but AEG is a corporate behemoth run by a reclusive billionaire who draws frequent comparisons to Howard Hughes. And he's widely known as being extremely frugal and bottom-line oriented. What you're saying is that KP would be rewarded for his "loyalty" by getting a potentially reduced price, and I find that extremely unlikely. Remember too, KP is not AEG's guy, they inherited him when AEG rescued the team from bankruptcy. AEG cut loose 2 GM's in NY and Chicago who actually got stadium deals done, and those were long-time AEG people.

I think it's going out on a limb to trust AEG to do the right thing, especially after the Red Bull deal (quote from 2004: we will never sell the NY or LA teams), AEG seems to want its money and they're not too particular how it comes in.

Just for the record, I hope KP is able to put something together and continue to run/own the team, and I'd be more than happy to see him get a "fair" price from AEG to do it. From the outside looking in, it just appears to be an odd situation.
