Buck Owens, Hee Haw host, composer of 'Act Naturally' died today at the age of 87.
RIP and thanks for opening my eyes to music beyond rock and roll.

Actually watched a reasonable bit of Hee Haw (enough to remember "Gloom, Despair, and Agony on Me" after many years) growing up, or at least, the television was on that channel and no one bothered to change it. Buck could play, as can Roy Clark, and that goes a long way with me.
Rest in Peace.

Buck's guitar (the stars and stripes accoustic) was an icon in its day.
Hee Haw was an eye opener for me. During the first few seasons I was then living in Wash.DC and getting my rocker eyes 'n ears opened wide by the wealth of bluegrass and country artists/festivals around there. Buck was a big star and later, after Hee Haw became big, was sort of remembered as ' that guy from Hee Haw. Wrong. He was flat out a player and a star.

Roy killed me. Could play absolutly anything and...with that damn big grin on his face...."howda like that lick buddy?"
Two classics.

Buck was an amazing guitarist. I used to love Hee Haw, just to watch Roy and Buck play.
R.I.P.

Wow, I'm somewhat surprised that Buck was considered that popular nationwide.
I actually live in Bakersfield (Buck's city), and can tell you that Buck was just a normal guy.
RIP Buck

Buckaroos were the first great country "band band"... was actually listening to the "Carnegie Hall" cd at the gym when someone told me, just as Buck was doing his Luther Perkins imitation...

Buck was the biggest selling country artist throughout the 1960s with something like 15 consecutive #1s and 20 some overall. i think most people remember him for hee-haw but he was a true seminal figure in country music. the legendary "bakerfield sound" brought country to a whole new audience.

i'm curious by what you mean "band band"? several groups, notably the carter family, appeared before the Buckeroos. i'm guessing though you have something specifc in mind with that observation.

In the sense of "band, not artist and supporting musicians." Buck was the name and the voice, but it functioned entirely as a band...
