This hasn't been talked about in awhile. I am interested to see who you would like to be on the starting squad.... I feel this is the squad and formation that gives us the best shot at the Cup......4-4-2 diamond

G. Neville-------Rio Ferdinand-------J. Terry---------------Ashley Cole

--------------------------L. King----------------------------

Beckham-------------------------------------------------Gerrard

-------------------------Lampard-----------------------------

-----------------------------Rooney (free to roam)--------------

Subs...
S. Campbell or Carragher on defense
J. Cole or SWP in midfield
Crouch (if it is a scoreless tie and after the 80th minute)

Well, at least we agree on the formation...:) You know, King has not performed poorly in that position. He hasn't been fantastic, but he has done an above average job there... I agree with you that J. Cole should be on the pitch, but we know Sven will have the Capt. in... It just doesn't leave a place for him on the starting squad...

In my dream England beat Brazil 2-1 with Hargreaves as the holding player, thats my reason for having him there.

Couple of things concerning the d-mid position. I think that Carrick gets the spot most of the time, IMO, but one thing that Hargreaves offers that the others don't is his man-marking ability, which could really come in handy against teams that use a Riquelme-type attacking playmaker.

Any dream with England beating Brazil in it is a beautiful one, second only to a teenage wet-dream... I am predicting England 2-1 over Italy, and Crouch falling over from the weight of hoisting the Cup above his head...:)

good trolling cobra, i think you should change your location from untied kingdom to unhinged kingdom though.

we all know what the starting XI will be.

robinson
neville/ferdinand/terry/cole
beckham/lampard/gerrard/cole
rooney/owen

i'm not saying that is what it should be, or the team that i would pick, but that is the starting XI that sven will pick. not really much point debating it.

If I were England manger, I would play the following in a 4-3-3 formation similar to the one employed by Barca:

Robinson

Neville Ferdinand Terry Cole

Carrick

Lampard Gerrard

Cole Rooney

Owen

I do not think that Gerrard and Lampard work well enough in the centre of a 4-4-2 formation. They are too similar to each other, and neither wants to provide cover when the other goes on a forward run. This 4-3-3 would allow for both Lampard and Gerrard to get forward when they like and not leave the defense exposed with Carrick playing breaking up opposing counterattacks. Rooney would be given the freedom to roam around like Ronaldinho does for Barca and should be able to generate plenty of chances for himself and others. Of course, this would require that Beckham be dropped, which wouldn't be so bad really.

The 4-3-3 formation has been tried and was not very effective(see the N. Ireland game in Belfast). Plus, that is just what we need is to tinker around with this formation so close to the World Cup. I think most of us all agree that the 4-4-2 diamond formation is a stronger one, and a successful one if clicking on all cylinders...
