For my last pick of the album draft I select: Can - Tago Mago

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000654Z2I.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

It was between this and 3 other albums for my final pick. I ended up going for this because just like my first pick I completely blew my mind the first time I heard it and it still does. Damo Suzuki may be an alien himself as shown on tracks like Peking O. I really don't know how to describe this album. Psychedelic, kraut rock, prog???? Some songs are just long jams, others are unexplanable collages of madness. You really have to hear it to believe it.

So as a recap here is my complete list:

1. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico
2. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
3. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
4. The Stooges - Fun House
5. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
6. Kraftwerk - Autobahn
7. Eric B. & Rakim - Paid in Full
8. Gang of Four - Entertainment
9. Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
10. Can - Tago Mago

Too tired to think of a pun.

UnorthodoxYank - Jay-Z - The Black Album

There's a whole gold mine of unpicked hip-hop out there and you picked this? Now, granted, Jay-Z's not that bad, but he's hardly anywhere near as good as what's fallen this far.

petezuke17 - Live - Throwing Copper

On principle, I should hate this ********ing album. It's very heavily produced, the musicianship isn't anything particularly spectacular, and Ed Kowalczyk is one of the biggest douchebags in an industry positively loaded with them. It's preachy, pompous crap. But I grew up with it, and loved it at the time, and I still dig it out once in a blue moon. When I was in junior high, Live were my favorite band, as ridiculous as that sounds. So I can't hate on it too much. Besides, like I said, I used to live in PA, and Live still have a bit of resonance there. And York IS a shit town. So, rather than feeling the full sting of my pimp hand, you just get a tap.

Pints - AC/DC - For Those About to Rock We Salute You

Kelly and I were wondering when someone would finally man up and take AC/DC. Without them, this draft was way too devoid of balls-out rawk, and that is unacceptable. Bravo.

i have no clue what it will be among about 7-8 choices, anyway i go leaves something important out

I have the last pick in the entire draft. So, I had to think of something special to wrap this whole thing up. That's why I thought of it a while ago.

With the second pick of round ten, and my final pick, I select:

http://store.acousticsounds.com/images/as60gif/AVER-4010.jpg

Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook - My list wouldn't be complete without one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century (in any genre), Ella Fitzgerald. In the 1950s, she sang the songbooks of a number of famous jazz musicians and song-writers, but this is her very best collaboration. Not only because some of these are recorded with Ellington's very own orchestra, but because the soulfulness of her voice reached its pinnacle here. Never did she sound better than she does here. I defy anyone to find a sexier song tune than "Chelsea Bridge," or as rollicking a rendition of "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)." I'd pity the aliens if they could never here this voice.

Edit: Oh right, the draft recap. Well, here's my full list:

1. Revolver - The Beatles
2. At Folsom Prison - Johnny Cash
3. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
4. Tommy - The Who
5. Chuck Berry Is On Top - Chuck Berry
6. Zen Arcade - Husker Du
7. Kid A - Radiohead
8. Me Against the World - Tupac Shakur
9. Birth of the Cool - Miles Davis
10. Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook - Ella Fitzgerald

I tried to establish a great range of styles in popular music from the 1940s through to the present day. On this list you'll hear pop, country, soul, rhythm & blues, rock and roll, rockabilly, punk, alternative, heavy metal, electronica, rap, and jazz. You'll also hear music from the 1940s (Birth of the Cool), 1950s (Chuck Berry is on Top, Ella Fitzgerald), 1960s (Revolver, At Folsom Prison, Tommy), 1970s (What's Going On), 1980s (Zen Arcade), 1990s (Me Against the World), and the present day (Kid A - 2000). You'll also find albums that reflect a theme of reaching for something great, but not quite obtaining it (Tommy, Zen Arcade, Kid A), which is at once profoundly musical and profoundly human. You'll also hear songs about the human experience, particularly on At Folsom Prison, What's Going On, and Me Against the World. I didn't strive to select the most influential albums of all time, but some of the greatest representations of their genres, and music that I simply love.

Finally, I'm happy to say that with the exception of London Calling and Kind of Blue (the latter I never expected to get anyway), I had no picks taken from me. :)

The wood goblin proxied me his pick.

Damn--I actually thought for a while that my turn would come around this afternoon. Oh well. Here's my last pick of the draft:

As we all know, this draft started with the premise that aliens were going to visit planet earth, with the idea that we would want to assemble a collection of music aimed at providing the aliens with a well-selected sample of what earthlings listen to.

Well, how about that. We're about to be invaded by Martians, and you Jablonskis want to share a cup of tea with them while you explain the virtues of Steely Dan and The Eagles.

Well, you can count me out of that plan, buddy.

I ain't interested in makin' friends with no goddamn aliens. I know what aliens do. The blow up your capitol buildings and shoot you with lasers and plant their spawn in your stomach. They have green scales and x-ray eyes, and they kidnap earthlings and cook them, because we're good sources of protein. Yes, I've seen the movies. I know what aliens are at like. You can try to be their best friends. I'm gonna smoke those mother********ers.

Yes, we are at war with the aliens.

And if there is a war, then there are soldiers.

And if there are soldiers, then there are POW camps.

Ladies and gentlemen, with that in mind, I present to you the warden of Abu Ghraib for aliens:

Tad. Salt Lick by Tad. This isn't music for aliens. This is music for driving in your 4 X 4 and whacking aliens on the head with a tire iron. This is pro-earthling music.

So while you goofballs are busy being turned into earthing candy, I'll be in a basement with this guy, pistol-whipping an alien we've tied up in the corner:

As far as my selections I already explained why I selected each one. Overall I was mostly looking for variety. I didn't want to repeat genres and wanted albums that were not only great and I enjoyed but were also important and influential in their genre. Most of my picks are from the 70's. I didn't plan it that way but that's how it turned out.

Brainfreeze ~ DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist

Despite my reluctance to add a second Shadow cd to my list, I could not pass up adding this postmodern orgy of a record. Originally released in very small numbers, bootlegging sent this record far and wide Brainfreeze is simply the most fun you can have listening to music. Two DJs sitting back and cutting up a stack of 45s for your listening pleasure. The sound is completely funky.

Quango
1. The Jimi Hendrix Experince ~ Are You Experienced
2. DJ Shadow ~Endtroducing
3. Michael Jackson ~ Thriller
4. Best of Motown, Vol. 1 [Compilation Pick]
5. Neil Young with Crazy Horse ~ Everbody Knows This Is Nowhere
6. Bob Dylan ~ Time Out of Mind
7. Leadbelly ~ Take This Hammer
8. Stereolab ~ Emperor Tomato Ketchup
9. Vince Guaraldi Trio ~ A Charlie Brown Christmas
10. DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist ~ Brainfreeze

I'll add more about my list later, because I have to go back to work. Q

No friggin' way! Great pick.

It wasn't actually going to be my final pick though. I was tempted to take it about nine times. But didn't. I was trying to hit on a bunch of different genres but decided to go with Koop since it touched on both DJ and jazz (and I already had a great soul album).

But it's a fantastic pick. I never thought it was going to get picked.

UnorthodoxYank - Jay-Z - The Black Album

See minothreats comments 'cause I agree completely.

petezuke17 - Live - Throwing Copper

The temptation is to bash the living shit out of the Amish Pearl Jam. Ed's incredible whine is in and of itself enough to back that decision up, but there is something to some of the songs. The intensity of the jealous emotion of "I Alone" does give one pause. Sure it's all overwrought and there's something not quite right but there is a tune or two to be had. The album is wildly inconsistent though. I think my decider here would be the fact that this has to be one of only 10 and something better could've occupied this slot. That said the make up of your list might have this selection make sense.

But I doubt it.

Pints - AC/DC - For Those About to Rock We Salute You

I feel kind of strange about this choice. I was wondering when the hell someone was going to pick the Brothers Young and had them moved to the top of my not picked list. But here you go and there they are. But why in the name of all that is sweaty and rawkin' did you not pick "******* ** ***" or "**** ** *****"? You'd get either side of the AC/DC equation with either and one of two of the best mother********ing hard rock records of all time. I'll give you the points for the band but this album choice seems really bizzare. Oh sure I'll rock out to some of the tunes on offer, but in the choice between the Maserati and the souped up Mazda, you take the former everytime.

Fire!

bmurphyfl - Alton & Hortense Ellis - Studio One: Alton & Hortense Ellis

Excellent pick and smart play. This is one that was likely to get looked over and your late play with it is wise and bold. Smooth soul/reggae tunes preformed by two of the tops in the game. 2nd wavers might get a bit of joy out of "Can't Get Used to Losing You". A great example, especially in Alton's case, of the beautiful indosyncracies of the Jamiacan pop voice. You may pass Go and collect $200.

drknow - Can - Tago Mago

Another from the list falls. There is nothing like Can. The music is so impossibly ********ed up it's not even worth trying to figure out what they were trying to do. As much as I've joked around earlier I really get the feeling that something extraterrestrial is/was going on here. I can't figure out if I'm surprised or not that this lasted this long.

Via_Chicago - Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook

You know what's wrong with this world. You know what is truly beyond all reckoning? It took until Round 10 for someone to pick Ella. Arguably one of the greatest singers of all time. You get everything, the whole technical thing (pitch, phrasing, control, tone) and heretofore unknown amounts of heart and soul (ok, wrong Songbook). I can see the temptation to go for one of the other famous songbooks recordings, but Ella was meant to sing Duke, like toast needs butter. This is an honest to God, 100% guaranteed or your money back steal.

bojendyk - Tad - Salt Lick

Your defense was both ellqouent and quite correct. God help the future. A fearsome, fearsome pick.

Quango - DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist - Brainfreeze

Good musical choice and it is different than your earlier one, but come on two involving the same artist? I can't help but think it's a huge tactical misstep.

True, but one could argue that Brainfreeze is really my second compilation pick featuring the 40 or so artists listed here:

http://www.dustystylus.com/mymusic/funk/bf.html

I felt like I needed to pick this album, because it represents music's (American music anyway) move into a postmodern era, where music is created from slicing and dicing, cutting and pasting older music. Sure, sampling started years earlier, but this took it to a new and awesome extreme.

This should be the last album the aliens hear (I'll put it at the bottom of the pile). Its frantic cuts and beats are music's life flashing before the aliens' eyes, the culmination of what our society was and has become.

I might get my ass kicked on this last selection, but I ain't winning this thing anyway, so here you are:

Chic - Risqué

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000002IHI.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Go ahead...mock me. I cannot in good conscience let a disco album go undrafted. Perhaps you'll disagree, but the aliens need to hear this album, if only to show them the coked-up/anonymous sex/Studio 54 culture of the late '70's.

So is this disposable music? Sure, you say. But you cannot deny the influence of "Good Times," can you? Nor can you say that Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards weren't good at what they did. They were the masters of disco. And lest you think that "Good Times" is the only thing of value on this album, you should think again. This album is golden all of the way through. Tracks like "My Feet Keep Dancing" and "My Forbidden Lover" make you wanna shake your booty.

YanksFC recap:

1. Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
2. Television - Marquee Moon
3. Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
4. Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli - Quintette du Hot Club de France: 25 Classics 1934-1940
5. De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
6. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
7. Desmond Dekker - Rude Boy Ska
8. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis
9. Massive Attack - Mezzanine
10. Chic - Risqué

Defense of the list:

It is what it is. Like some other drafters, I tried to stick with what was in my record collection. The list is a good reflection of my record collection (how about that rhyme?). My only regret is that my collection is rather short on blues and country. I'm going to have to change that because I know that I'm missing a lot. Hence, the dearth of blues/country selections.

But all in all, I'm happy with what I have here. I tried to span genre and time in the best way that I could.

So there you have it.
