Boy I trawled really hard and couldn't talk myself into a single album-- only thing I thought was up to snuff qua album was the Marvin Gaye, and I don't care much for Gaye. I tried really really hard to talk myself into the "Standing In The Shadows of Motown" soundtrack, but the remakes lack the simple brilliance of the originals, and it is Supremes-light for some presumably legal reason... my take is, the singles are brilliant, the albums not...
i'm sorry, but i don't even know what that means

It just dawned on me that Buddy Holly was not picked. Ouch!
I considered it but decided to only take albums I own.

For the record, I actually still like Tom Waits, but the days of considering him a cracked genius ended around my 22nd birthday.
Garth Brooks is terrible, but I've got to hand it to whoever wrote the lyrics to "Friends in Low Places." It sounds like young country but reads like Cole Porter.
And who wants to bet that the aliens already own something by ABBA?

ABBA would've been an excellent choice. They were the band I was referring to in the Chic review. Tight pop harmonies and otherwordly studio craft. It's weirdly amazing stuff.
I was also surprised at the absence of the Greatful Dead, a band I pretty much despise btw. But they do have a unique sound. As an aside a friend in college knew I was not a believer so he volunteered to take me to a show and make sure I was in the "proper frame of mind" to receive the message. Probably the most boring thing I've ever endured. Mind the pizza at the arena tasted really, really good and the spectacle in the parking lot was worth the (long strange) trip.
Even with my dislike of the band I'll give 'em a song or two but that in no way relieves them of their responsibility for countless hours of crap.
As far as ol' Tom Waits, if you don't feel impelled to sing "Grapefruit Moon" after downing many cups, there is something wrong with you. Something very, very wrong.

Its not clear to me what separates ABBA from the Mamas and the Papas, other than ten years growth of technology...and ten years growth of marketing expertise
As for the Dead, the proper frame of mind to see them initially is clean and sober; many initiators made that mistake... But it is clearly not for everyone even though it is at the heart of what many of us actually mean by "musical". How do you respond to jam bands in general? Allman's, Phish, Spreads, whatever? :(

I brought them up only to joke that the aliens probably already owned their greatest hits.

Now that I review the full lists, I'm not sure what nancy's talking about-- I maybe like Yanks' better and Bluto's is good too, but she seems in the running to me. Bludaddy's looks good too...

The varieties of human experience approach the infinite...
(Eddy Arnold is to Hank Williams as John Tesh is to Jan Hammer... as Pat Travers is to Jimi Hendrix... as Kevin Costner is to Jack Nicholson... somewherein there...)

Great or important undrafted college rock/indie rock:
Built to Spill's Perfect From Now On, perhaps the finest indie rock record of the 90s. I'd take this over Pavement any day of the week and twice on Sunday, and I even like Pavement. Keep It Like a Secret, There's Nothing Wrong With Love, and Ultimate Alternative Wavers would have all been acceptable alternatives, as would have been the first Halo Benders record.
The Fall's, well, anything, really. Without the Fall, there's no Pavement, no Art Brut, no Elastica.
Camper Van Beethoven's Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart. This is a nearly perfect record by a fun band. The best songs on Key Lime Pie are arguably better, but KLP absolutely dies after the wonderful "Borderline."
Big Black's Songs About ********ing. How many bands in the past 20 years owe royalty payments to Steve Albini, and not just for his work behind the boards?
The Replacement's Pleased to Meet Me, which was only topped by the Mats record I chose. This one is fantastic from start to finish. Tim is also damn fine. If "Can't Hardly Wait" or "Left of the Dial" don't lift your spirits, then you were already 25 years old at birth.
Something by Beat Happening or the Cramps could have been picked, as these two undersung bands paved the way for the White Stripes, John Spenser, and just about every band since the 80s that decided that bass players weren't necessary.
