Given Garber's recent statements about plans for MLS by 2010 with a 16 team League that includes the 09 Expansion South Jersey franchaise, there may be an implicit deadline for DC to get its Stadium and Ownership issues resolved.

At first this seems somewhat of a stretch, but with the limited number of teams in the League by 2010, I can see MLS taking advantage of a great Stadium deal in Jersey with a United move if the situation in DC stagnates.

Nah, I disagree. If D.C. freezes United out, a stadium will be built somewhere in the suburbs. Actually, I'm fairly confident that the Poplar Point stadium deal will go down soon after the feds transfer the land over to D.C. What concerns me is that the stadium (whether it's done at Poplar Point or in the suburbs) will be done on the cheap if our I/O situation isn't firmed up before construction begins.

Agreed. After having been to Columbus I can say that United will not make that mistake. An overblown high school (American) football stadium is clearly what's in Columbus. The powers that be at DCU will ensure we have a quality venue to play in. That I am confident of. :D

I think there is zero chance MLS will move the flagship and most recognized team in MLS

DC's got plenty of fans anyways. In the absolute worst case they can play in the Soccer Plex in Montgomery Cty until they get a stadium.

That's some worst case. I would suspect they (temporarily) move the team before they play in a 3000 seat venue, àla the New Orleans situation last year.

Thx,

Jay!

Why wouldn't RFK be used until DC United builds something better?

Hell I've got a pretty big yard if it comes down to it. :)

I live in a TH - they could play on my yard and my neighbor's yard (I asked). Though there are just 5 visitor parking spaces. :D

This may be a bit extreme but if there is no owner and no firm stadium plans then it could happen.

I've never heard them called "Trailer Homes" before. Trailer Park and Mobile Home, yes...

Thx,

OK, clown - I can't wait until you get drunk and pass out on the hotel room floor! :D

College Park, Germanstown soccerplex are both too small to hold more than 5,000 fans. That doesn't mean that College park couldn't increase the size of the stands - but I can't really imagine that they would be able to hold more than 10K.

Byrd stadium (at College park) isn't really an option as well, since UMD football would be an issue for spring games, fall games.

Fedex is a possibility but not desirable.

Let's take a deep breath and see why happens this year.

thank you, not to mention, that in a couple of years, we could be seeing 20+K crowds at dcu games every game

RFK won't be demolished just yet

What's with the arbitrary 2009 deadline? The DC Sports & Entertainment Commission makes money off of DCU at RFK, I'm sure they're happy to keep it around as long as possible, because they'll make less once a new stadium is built (or 0 if it's built in Loudoun County). I'm sure DCU is pursuing suburban options already given the uncertainty of timing of Poplar Pt, but I see NO CHANCE that the team would not be allowd to play at RFK as long as they want...remember, once RFK gets torn down DC also has to pay to build a huge park, so it's really a double-whammy for DCU to leave.

We're the best supported and best run team in MLS. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but a lot of things would have to go wrong for MLS to relocate us.

They could always play at W.T. Woodson High School here in Fairfax, that's where I would go to watch the "Washington Stars" play, usually a pretty packed house. :)

Groan. Let's not go there. Isn't that the sort of thing that fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the original Cleveland Browns, the Los Angeles Rams, the Oakland er - Los Angeles Raiders, the Minneapolis Lakers, and the Houston Oilers bought into?

My thinking is that the very presence of KP is sort of like our canary in the coal mine. As long as KP is here, let's just assume that the stadium deal is going to get done one way or the other and, more importantly, that United is safe. If KP goes somewhere else, then we all should panic.

All this big thinking is hurting my head. I think that maybe it's better, at this point in time, to concentrate all of our energy on the Red Bull NY/NJ season opener and leave all the big thoughts to our KP and the Front Office gang. Oh, and we need to concentrate our energy on all of the beer we'll be drinking next weekend too. Ah, beer the cause of and solution to all of the world's problems.

This thread is based on pure speculation. There is no deadline for DC United to get a stadium. None. Zero.

Of course, this being BigSoccer, I expect this thread to grow to at least 10 pages.
