View Full Version : Aside from "Bubbles" What's your favorite Hammers song?

West Ham has a great history of songs. Granted we never had the repetoire worthy of a Broadway revue show like Chelsea or some of the Northern clubs, but we do have the best use of bad language and salty imagery. So not counting "Bubbles", which West Ham song whips you into that wonderful Hammerific frenzy?

My mate, Richard Digence, wrote a song called: Working class millionaire, that had a nice bit in it...

I'd have a mansion down in Bow
where all my mates could go
A carriage and a team of dappled greys.
On the lawn, there'd be a seat
for tired pairs of feet,
of folk whats walked in search of better days.
There'd be a lion either side
of the gateway to the drive
and a statue of Billy Bonds would greet me guests
and in the marble halls
goalposts painted on the walls
and other things the 'amstead crowd detests..........

Hmmmm. Not Stomper's style, but he also wrote a couple of 'Indian' songs with me.
It's japati and I'll cry if I want to...
Where's your poppadom......
Not to mention the fishing songs we did.
Those were the dace my friend.
The eels are alive with the sound of music.
Salmon chanted evening.......
Where was I?????? I think I lost the thread somewhere.

Apart from telling Chelscum where to stick their blue flag, I don't think any of these are sung Madrazo

In fact we don't seem to have much of a repertoire at all really, I guess one of the current faves is "Zamora, whooooaaaah, Zamora, whoooooaaaah, he came from White Hart Lane, he's better than Jermaine, Zamora etc..."

Really? :( Those are just the ones I found the words to from poking around on various Hammers websites. I'd have to say my personal favorite is The Bells Are Ringing. Lyricially (I've never actually heard it sung) it must be quite a moving tribute when you actually hear it live...but if none of them are actually sung anymore, then that's too bad. The only ones I actually heard when I went to visit Upton Park were I Love East London and Bubbles.

However I do like that Zamora song. The only edit I'd make is changing "white" to "shite hart lane". :)

Truly a classic but I'll have to go for Oh east London. Is wonderful... etc

The Irons are cold, familiar story,
The bu0bbles that bur8st a hairs breadth from glory
They play their sad game in othe depths of the east
And always fall short of winning the beast

Goodbye to my city
The old and the new
The tatty Boleyn
The Caret and Blue
I've gone to the West
And no more will see
The grave that holds liam Heaney

(he was a mate who died ipn a car crash)

Key of G. 3/4 time. Off you go Norway!

Billy Blagg mentioned in his obituary to Ron Greenwood the song we all sung during his time.

To the tune of grocer Jack from the teenage opera by Keith West.

Ron Greenwood, Ron Greenwood, is it true what people say we're going to win the football league.

I always liked our song to dodgey referees.

I like:

Ooo Ooo Ooooooo,
Nigel Rio Coker

(to the tune of c'mon and do the conga)

and bubbles, although TBH I get embarrassed when we sing 'blue flag' because it tends to have nothing to do with who we are playing, eg: when we beat Man City in the cup. Why sing it then?

Why go hunting for Millwall fans when we're not playing them or even in the same division? Just one of those quirky West Ham twitches I guess.

Well at least Man City wears blue, just change Stamford Bridge to City of Manchester Stadium.

A reasonable suggestion, but that requires changing the time signature of the song for a short time to jam the words in there. Also, it makes you have to put Upton Park first, so it would be:

"Oh stick the blue
flag up your ass
Oh stick the blue flag up your ass
From Upton Park to cityofmanchesterstadium!
We'll stick the blue flag up your ass!"
Or something like that. I know it's supposed to be "arse" but it's hard to switch the accent just for one word, so I always sing "ass" just to be consistent. ;)

Another thing, if you're going to be at the world cup this year then I suggest this one that was started by England but in the current climate would work for us Americans too:

(To the tune of "She'll Be Comin' Around The Mountain")
Stick your f'''king France up your ass!
You can stick your f'''king France up your ass!
Stick your f'''king France, you can stick your f'''king France
Because we know you froggies love it in the ass!

I guess you could also insert the name of whatever country you are playing for France and the racial epithet of your choice for "froggies". :)

I heard this one at a Revolution match once about how all New England loves the Revs, but Connecticut doesn't count or something like that. Quality, seeing that Connecticut is a just a suburb of NYC and most people there are RBNY fans, even the ones who live fairly close to Foxboro near the Mass border.

Cass Pennant wrote a nice chapter about West Ham songs in his book about the ICF. Some of them are even more politically incorrect than the one I posted above so I won't go into detail about them but they're hilarious and totally worth the money (and the shipping, seeing that you can only get it in or from England, unless you luck out and find one in a used book store.) If you're not offended by bad language or bothered by graphic violence, I'd suggest picking up a copy. It's a great read and it has the lyrics to almost every West Ham song in the back, kind of like an appendix.
