A dirct free kick is awarded only when one of the 10 penal fouls occur and it must occur outside a teams own oenalty area or a penalty kick will be awarded not a DFK. All other fouls and infractions result in an indirect free kick. In 6 of the penal fouls, the referee must decide if the foul was performed in at least a careless manner they are 1. kicking or attemptin to kick an opponent 2, tripping or attempting to trip an opponent, 3. stricking or attempting to strike an opponent 4. jumping at an oppnent, 5 charging an opponent, 6. pushing an opponent. The other 4 merely have to in the opinion of the referee occur. They are 1, spitting at an oppoenet, 2. deliberately handling the ball, 3. holding an opponent,. 4. when tackling the ball, making contact with the opponent before the ball.

Illegal contact between opponents/ball (handling) = direct kick.
Any other violation (offside, passback, etc) = indirect kick.
Outside interference = dropped ball.
