From the end of the article:

"Arena said that if he leaves the national team after the World Cup, he would consider coaching in MLS."

Where do you think Bruce will want to coach? duh.......

Peter having got his coaching feet wet, moves on to Poland or the likes, and Bruce returns. Can you imagine the scenario? I'm having trouble getting my head around it.

Who is left on the team from the Bruce dynasty? Jamie and Olsen. Is that it?

You don't think Red Bull would pony up ridiculous cash for Bruce?

There's no salary cap for coaches and I'd have to believe they'd be able to outbid anybody. By a factor of ten.

Not sure Bruce would put up with Alexi as GM, though... :D

But would Bruce coach the Scum? I don't think so.

But they wouldn't pay in actual dollars, they'd pay in <yuck> product!

Bruce coaching in the MLS just makes so much sense as opposed to an overseas job, and at DC United has to be the obvious and comfortable choice for him.

Where else to keep up on the MLS players and grooms players for the 2010 world cup?

Granted his UVA ties might not reap as many rewards this time....

***Warning*****

Do NOT mention Bruce and THE SCUM in the same post ever!!!

....unless that is we are beating them with him as the coach (or recollections of us beating them with him as coach).

Wow, there are a lot of folks here quick to throw one Mr. Nowak under the bus. Sure, Bruce is a great coach, but let's show Peter a little love here, huh? It's not like we're the dregs of the league looking for a turnaround spark here.

Besides, I'd be stunned if Bruce actually did return to MLS. What's he got left to prove here? If he doesn't get the sexy European job he's hoping for, he'll use MLS as leverage to get a new deal from USSF and stay on through 2010.

Let's be serious here. If Red Bull really ponied up that much money for Bruce do you really think he'd turn down the chance to go back to where he's from and make ridiculous coin doing it at the same time?

I'd love to think Bruce would come back to DC, but who's to say that's what is going to happen. I personally haven't read anything about Arena's preferences either way, but if he wanted to go back closer to where he's from, NY seems like a pretty viable option.

I have to agree with our Elder Statesman here. That's Todd.

Another way to look at it is that coaching in MLS pays a lot less than coaching the Nats. His first choice wil be overseas or depending on how the WC goes, continuing with the Nats. If Red Bull pays him a lot more than any other MLS team (like ours) he'll go there.

I think he'll be coaching overseas after the World Cup, IMHO. He has a track record as an excellent coach at both club and country. I have no idea where, but I could see him taking an upper-tier CCC club to the Premiership. While it's entirely possible for him to coach in MLS again, I think he has a large enough ego where he would really want to see what he could accomplish overseas.

If Bruce expressed interest in returning to DC I'd throw Nowak under a variety of moving vehicles in order to make it happen. Nowak has been no better than OK as a coach- Bruce is, quite simply, an American legend. The 04 playoff run was a great thing, but besides that DC have been pretty hit and miss. The end of last season (even before the chicago game) was awful. I'm also not convinced that Nowak has been particularily good with Freddy (acknowledging that that wasn't gonna be easy). DC had the personnel last year- certainly on par with the fire if not the Revs, but lost alot of tactical battles. Also there's the disturbing trend of total collapse in important games (Chicago, U Catolica, PUMAS) that's on the coach.

Frankly though, I hope Bruce takes the US to South Africa because I don't see an American replacement and don't know if the the USSF has the cash to pay for a top foreign coach (GUUUUUUS)

Couple of points...

First off, Bruce won more than three trophies at DCU:

MLS Cup 96, 97; USOC 96; CONCACAF Champions' Cup 98; Supporters' Shield 97 and Interamerican Cup 98.

Second, Bruce hand-picked Alexi to be one of his over-age players on the 96 Olympic team. They get along fine. Bruce would have zero qualms being in the same organization as Lalas, especially since Alexi knows well enough to leave Arena alone with player selection and day-to-day running of the team.

Finally, it's gonna take a lot of jack to get Bruce back in MLS. A lot. So, if Red Bull is willing to vastly out-bid AEG, I could see him going. Yeah, Bruce has deep-ties to DCU, obviously, but it's a business and money talks. Bruce has likely gotten pretty used to making 800K or whatever it is the Fed pays him. No coach in MLS makes half that so Bruce will likely be looking to get as close to what he was making with the USSF as possible.

What I could see really catching Arena's attention is an offer that included a piece of the team. I don't see AEG giving pieces away of an entity they are looking to sell as it could complicate a potential sale. But, if Payne is able to put together an ownership group or if an outside group comes in and buys the team, I can see them offering Bruce a slice of the club and that swaying the deal.

That's IF he comes back to MLS. I still think the odds are greater he'll re-up with the USSF or take a Euro offer. But, if he goes the MLS route, I wouldn't rule out Red Bull.

My guess is that if he does come back to MLS, he goes to NY. He has made clear an interest in the longterm viability of the league, one of the organizing principles of which is that a healthy NY franchise is healthy for the league. I do not doubt that he has a lot of affection for DC, but I also suspect he has a broader focus than just a parochial DC United one.

That might be Ok for Steve Sampson who was way over his head with the USMNT, but found a job with MLS after a few years of youth league coaching. Arena has too much going for him at this stage to take a step back. The next challenge is a major club in Europe hopefully at the top level. I respect BA far too much to hope to see him back at DCU.

Todd has come a long way since missing the open net at the All Star Game. :D He speaks the truth. If Arena wants to come back to MLS, NY will be one of his options.

Here's what was in the Post today. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/21/AR2006032101495.html)

"After I finish with the World Cup and have to make some plans [about] what I'm going to do down the road, perhaps the MLS will be my choice," said Arena, who coached D.C. United for three years. "I have to do something after this World Cup. I might keep going [with the national team]. I need a job, though, I know that. I might become a sportswriter."

Coming back to MLS (and DC United) is just as likely for Arena as staying with the national team or becoming a sportswriter.

I think the Post should pick him up to write columns and analysis on soccer, those could be hilarious. Even better some youth team should send out a press release saying they offered Arena the job of coach for some U-10 team. They could say they read about him needing a job after the WC and the Fall season starts soon after it ends so the timing is perfect.

Answer this question: Why does he live in Fairfax?

A successful national team coach and a successful World Cup coach would have a lot of global cache. The Bruce could certainly do a Bora Bora world tour, taking over various Latin American minor teams and Arab emirates teams to shepherd them through qualification or six month jobs to take them to the second round of the WC.
