I grew up in East London and had a very happy childhood. The joys of sliding down the Beckton tips on a bit of rusty old corrugated iron from an air raid shelter was fun. As was catching the horses that were waiting their turn for the glue factory and riding them bare back across the playing fields.
It was great, but I never wanted my kids to grow up there. I love going back for the odd game, but things have changed and the east end that I knew, has gone for good. It still has character; it's just a different one. The only things that are the same.... Upton Park on matchday and Manzies pie and mash. Tony. :D
