Should the name of the forum be changed to "South Jersey / Philadelphia" or something? If MLS team owners won't give the Garden State any love at least BigSoccer could maybe. :D

No.
I meant to say No, why don't we wait until there is actually a team name...;)

I understand where Matt is coming from, but I agree with Looper. For now, we are sure that the whole Philly Metro Market is represented in this forum, but until we have something concrete, I say we leave it the way it is.

So a forum name of "Philadelphia / South Jersey" would associate yourself with "north jersey" huh? Interesting.
I guess that's because in North Jersey they know how to use upper case letters.

No, seeing as how hardly anyone from the Pennsylvania side of the river will support the team if "Jersey" is in the name

Do you have proof of this, or are you just full of &$*&?

My proof is that I grew up in Philadelphia and know what the sports culture and cross-river politics are like.
Why should I or anyone else who is from the Pennsylvania side support a "South Jersey" team?? I'm not from South Jersey, I've never lived in South Jersey, I have no connection to South Jersey other than the fact that I go to AC a few times a year. South Jersey is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area but Philadelphia (and the Pennsylvania--and Delaware for that matter--suburbs) are not part of the South Jersey metropolitan area. After Chivas USA followed by the Quakes debacle, the #1 thing MLS could do to alienate me as a fan of the league would be to put the team in Glassboro without "Philadelphia" in the name, effectively killing any chance that Philly will ever get a team.

Guess we'll never be seeing you at any games eh? I think the question was, is how can you speak for everybody...Are you the official Philadelphia Past and Present Groupthink conveyor?

Well, that's enough for me then.

I'm not from South Jersey either, I've never lived there, and I also go to Atlantic City a few times a year. Should I not support the team either? Because I certainly would.
South Jersey is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area but Philadelphia (and the Pennsylvania--and Delaware for that matter--suburbs) are not part of the South Jersey metropolitan area.
Huh? That makes no sense.

What? I would think that putting Philadelphia in the name would decrease the chance of a actually in Philadelphia team, not increase it. What's killed the chance of Philly getting a team is no investor willing to make it happen. Rowan is offering to build a stadium, thus actually making the site attractive for an investor. Has Philadelphia done that? No? Well, that's why there's no MLS team within the city limits.
The #1 thing MLS could do to make me dislike it would be to put yet another team in my home state but name it after somewhere where it will not be actually playing.
If you really hate New Jersey that much, then feel free not to come. Atlantic City and the new soccer team can live without you.

I don't "hate" New Jersey, I just have no connection to it.
The "Philadelphia" name represents the entire Philly metropolitan area, including the PA, NJ, and DE suburbs. The "South Jersey" name represents only South Jersey. If a "Philadelphia" team is playing in the NJ suburbs I will support it (although most PA residents who aren't die-hard soccer fans won't, but that's another discussion altogether), but why should I support a team that doesn't represent me??

Because "South Jersey" (assuming that's the name, and who knows about that) simply means the team plays in South Jersey, not that it only "represents" that area. There's room for the entire area to support the team.

Yeah, exactly.

When Philadelphia antes up for a stadium they can have a team named after their fine city.

Fine, as long as you also want to have MLS teams called the Bridgeview Fire, FC Frisco, the Carson Galaxy, Red Bull East Rutherford (soon to be Red Bull Harrison), and Real (forget the name of the suburb their stadium is getting built in).
If the stadium was to be located in a Philadelphia suburb the same distance from Center City as Glassboro is, it'd be called Philadelphia and my bet is you'd have no problem with it. The only reason you want it to have a South Jersey name is because it'll be located on that side of the Delaware River. Yet you bitch and moan about Pennsylvania fans who won't support a "South Jersey" team because it wouldn't represent them. In other words, you're discriminating based on state lines but we're not allowed to. Nice double standard.

No I'm not. I'd support a team called Philadelphia that played in Philadelphia, or the suburbs if people in those suburbs thought of themselves as being in Philadelphia. I'd support a team called South Jersey or Glassboro that played there.
You would not.
So who has the double standard?
Chicago Fire have always played in Chicago when they could. Los Angeles Galaxy started in Los Angeles City, and still play I believe in Los Angeles County. Real Salt Lake (a dumb name, but whatever) play in Salt Lake City and seemingly will still be in Salt Lake County. FC Dallas started life in Dallas.
Red Bull have never played in New York, thus I think they should go with Harrison or North Jersey. This new team will start life in South Jersey, thus it should be named after it.

Yeah, but we both know the likelihood of that happening is not good, unless the politicians in Trenton decide to pass a law stating that all professional sports teams in the state that recieve state money for anything from stadium construction to highway widening (as I think that's the only way they could get away with it) have to have some type of geographic moniker that is associated with the state.
I know I'd have a hard time supporting SJ whatever, but I'm coming to grips with a perfectly good non-geographic name...now its just time to come up with one of those.
