With yesterday's announcement of a Glassboro-based team, the debate is already on as to how the team should be named to optimize the local support yet also be politically correct at the same time. Since we probably have a few years to research the topic to avoid another Houston 1836 renaming debacle, here are a few of the ones that I see possibly under consideration:
* Philadelphia
* Jersey-Theme (i.e. New Jersey, Jersey, South Jersey)
* Regional-Theme (i.e. Delaware Valley, Mid-Atlantic)
* College-Theme (i.e. Rowan F.C., Universidad style name)
* No Geographic Theme (i.e. Union S.C., F.C. 1776, Independence F.C.)
* Other
Let the debates begin (even though they already started in other threads).

But if it's a boro, then it can't be a city.

It might be a city, or even a town, but its definitely not a borough.

after years of ridiculing the NY Giants and Jets for calling themselves NY when they're in New Jersey, I cant see how I can get behind this team in south jersey even if it calls itself philadelphia. sorry if Im the only one who feels this way but its how I feel.

If you do the research, there are a ton of soccer teams in the tri state area back in the turn of the century in the ASL and other old leagues. There was a thread about tradition before that mentioned the Bethelem Steel F.C. and its history. Why not revive a team from the 1800s?

The form of Government is indeed a borough. Many 'towns' in that area use that model. I grew up in the Borough of Clayton, four miles to the south of Glassboro.

It's on thier letterhead. :rolleyes:

They should be called South Jersey <something> SC or Glassboro <something>. That's where they'll be, that's what they should go by.
I think it would be cool if they shared the same colors as Rowan University's teams as well.

Well...If Rowan U. will be the one coughing up most of the $$, then I don't see why not some related to the university name. It's not unusual, at least in Latin America, to have professional teams with " Universidad" in their name.
Heck. Since our league is about using euro or latin american team names, we can use some precedent:

[B]Universidad de Chile
and this is Rowan's athletic mascot:

Rowan U.!
If not Rowan AC....:D

I wonder if there would be an issue with the NCAA for using the name. And Glassboro was the name of the school until like 10 years ago, so that would work.
I think using the same color scheme (even if it is a bit ugly) would be a good connection with the school.

I like it when a team name originates from the city or area's heritage. But in this case it's Glass blowing.
South Jersey Blowers
.......just doesn't have that family appeal that I'm sure MLS is going for.
But it's still better than either Houston name or Red Bulls.
A name commemorating the summit between Kosygin and Johnson (which happened at Glassboro State ...now Rowan) could be good.

And that's a question I have not seen answered. I am not sure it would be a problem....but...one never knows.

Is it Yellow and Brown? Here is a pic of their soccer team uni:

I'd go for the regional appeal. Delaware Valley would work. Although for marketing purposes, attaching Philadelphia to the name might be best.

If this happens... MLS has a chance to finally get it right on a real cool name that doesn't mention a specific city. Like "MetroStars" but something that actually sounds good.
Union FC
FC Independance
FC Constitution
Liberties FC
Generals
Brothers United :)

There was some posturing by Corzine, et al, after the Metrostars changed their name, and I doubt that the administration would be pleased if "Jersey" if left out altogether in place of "Philadelphia." As someone else mentioned, an inclusive name would work well, something like "Delaware Valley Athletic" or "SC Delaware Valley." We could be getting some joint name similar to N.Y./N.J. to satisfy both states, however; I'm hoping this is not the case. "FC South Jersey" does have a nice ring to it, though....

After the Red Bull naming fiasco, I'd hope that MLS considers a good regional name. The best names I've heard on these boards are "Delaware Valley" and " PSJ United." The nickname doesn't matter as much. It could simply be a color. Or, it could be something like the Rovers (well, there's going to be a whole lot of commuting to your matches), the Colonials or the Riverhawks. I really don't like concept names like, say, "Independence FC."

Why is "South Jersey" such a horrible name again? All the complaints from Philly people are about the trip to get there. No one I don't believe has complained about the team being named after where it will actually be playing.
"Red Bull New York" is supposedly a regional name too after all.
