View Full Version : Anyone Headed to Germany Alone?

Okay so forgive this personal message but I wonder if anyone else is in the same boat as myself. I was headed to Germany with my brother-in-law but he ended up getting a great offer to work for FIFA during the entire Cup and will now be holed up in Berlin. I'd planned on going for two weeks for the group stage (got the plane tix and hotels reserved) but now I'm not sure about it. My wife is unable to join me b/c of the kiddos and taking the whole family is a no-go.
I've been really excited to go see the US matches for so long and now I'm not sure if it will be worth it to go by myself -- kinda in a quandry. I wonder if anyone else here was in a similar situation or had any thoughts or recommendations about my plans. Thanks!

I'm going by myself....would've rather gone with friends but I'm the only idiot crazy enough to spend almost $2500 on this trip......you'll have tons of friends there in other US fans, so no need to worry

i'm going by myself - i've travelled both alone and with someone else in europe before and both were pretty great. my parents are actually going to be over there and i'll be sitting with them at the games but i'm looking forward to being off on my own the rest of the 2 weeks i am there.

I'll be travelling by myself. I've travelled in Germany solo a couple of times before, so it's not a big deal to me. Plus, it was pretty easy hooking up with USA fans last time around and I expect it to be the same this time. So if I need someone to hang out with, not a problem. Surely you'll meet someone you get along well with over there. We all have at least ONE common interest.

First I was going with two friends who have since backed out because we haven't got shite from USSF as far as tickets go. Then I was going solo. Now my fiance's younger brother has signed up which has turned out to be a blessing- at least he's gung-ho and not complaining constantly about tickets. (Like I need that after all of this) But he has to scratch up airfare-
So I may be solo, or not, but we'll all get together and drink a lot!

Everyone should travel abroad alone at least once in their life, but that's just my opinion. Having done it, I can say I feel I am a better person for it. You'll be surprised, but there are some things that are actually easier about it than when traveling with someone else.
As for having a good time, you'll find other USA fans to hang with. I myself am an introvert and I have trouble meeting people, but not at the World Cup. As soon as you touch down at the airport, it is like the excitement just picks you up and carries you through the rest of the way. Just be sure to wear USA soccer shirts so people recognize you.
You'll come home with several new friends from all over the US.

I'll be going by myself for the first couple of days in Germany. I've done so in the past for six months in Ireland. Trust me you will not be alone for long, you will meet people in the same boat as you're in, and they won't necessarily need to be American, just be careful and try to learn some basic German words. You'll be appreciated more by the locals, in any regard most Germans speak English very well.

I'll be going alone. I thougth that if I waited until I found people that are serious about going and can get everything together then I'd end up not going at all.

I most likely will be going alone. Unless I can find tickets for the other guy who wants to go. I am not too worried as I have always wanted to go to Europe.

i'm heading out to Germany alone as well, and i'm sure there will be plenty more beyond those of us who congregate on this board, and i plan on meeting, drinking, and cheering along the US with every single one of them

If you have an extra ticket I'll help you cheer for Korea... as long as it's not against US.

I'll be going it alone as well. This is a pilrimage for myself and my wife isn't interested in being a footy whore for so long depsite the fact that we have some family to hang with in Munchen. Toting a 4 year old around wouldn't be all that fun either especially on such a long flight.

None of my friends/students got tickets, at least not yet. So I'll be on my lonesome for two weeks.

If my brother is too drunk/hung over I might as well be on my own :D

I SALUTE all of you, especially those of you travelling alone. Wish I I could join you.
If you're in a group, have pity on the lone wolves, buy them a beer, include them.
If you're alone, don't be standoffish. As has been mentioned, you're all in Germany for the same reason. Get drunk with people (not just Americans) and enjoy the world's greatest sporting event. Before you know it, you'll be married with children and will be watching on TV. This is something to be savored.

Please heed Sir Nigel's advice here.

Those of you who've met me will know the last thing I could possibly be described as is standoffish (towards fellow US fans anyway).
I'll be the drunk guy, see you all there, GO YANKS

I'll be traveling alone prior for a month and a half (May 1st through Turkey, the Balkans, Croatia, Italy) and just booked my Venice - Frankfurt flight for all of 40 bucks from Ryanair for June 8th. I'm meeting friends and we're renting a van and chasing games. I'll be with friends from the 9th-20th and we'll be in the stadium for the first two games (hopefully we can get some awesome USMNT supporters pub crawls prior!!) but alone once again the 20th to July 13th. So ya, anyone looking to hang out from June 20th onward, let me know! Or if any of the pre-tourny travel is exactly what someone else is into, msg me.
Go Nats!
