Question to our friendly Mod, Old Lady. How can this place host the 2006 World Cup final? :o
It may just be the wintry weather or on-going renovation, but boy does this stadium look ugly from the outside. Especially with all the barbed wires and steel fencing. Even the ticket window offices have metal bars.

The only relevence is that Old Lady loves Hertha. I was really, really disappointed after that all that treking through the wintry weather got me nothing but pictures of a giant prison.

Sorry didn't see this thread until now :o
Rest assured...the inside is quite beautiful. And for the World Cup, you will seem a much more beautiful outside. Most people will not enter through that way, they will enter through here:

Trust me it will look fine for the World Cup. I can't wait when I make my first trek there in Spring next year.

I was just hoping to show these pictures to you, Old Lady, to get your opinion. Can't we put it in a NSR in the China Forum? You were planning to move it to a forum related to football stadia?

No to the German thread...I'm not the one to talk about the Olympiastadion, as I have never been there. Others are more qualified.

The stadium which build in 1934-1936, thus this which the look in that time. For the WC it was original-faithfully copied, there it under monument protection may to it-build one not moderen things there for much. Hitler which in that stage the Olympic Games in 1936.

From an architectural point of view, the Olympiastadion is way more important than any of the modern stadia, which most likely won't be arround in 70 years anymore.

A a very historic stadium, and they have done a good job modernising it for the World Cup (it was not very nice a few years ago). It is not, however, a 'modern' stadium by any stretch of the imagination, and personally I don't really like it.
First point is that any stadium with a track around it will suffer. Fans are farther from the feild. Period.
Also, they built a new roof, but seem to have forgotten that in the year 2006 we do actually have technology that makes it possible to build a roof without having pillars blocking the view in the stadium. It's quaint at Wrigley Field. In a new construction I just don't it, though.
This may get cleared up before the WC starts, but last time I was there everything was very poorly marked. Finding the correct section is difficult.
Ticket purchasing at the stadium seems designed to make your life difficult, but this of course will be irrelevant for the World Cup.

To build a roof without pillars would contravene the historic building regulations in Germany, since it would require building massive spires around the ground to hold up the roof, which would damage the facade of the Olympiastadion.
So it's either that or stop whining when you get rained on.

Yepp. Another big static problem with the roof was, that it was not allowed to build it over the historic marathon gate, so the ring of the roof could not be closed.
