In light of the breaking news thread....
If in Philly metro, will you support a MLS team in Glassboro?

Depends on what the team is going to be called.
Glassboro?
South Jersey?
Philadelphia?
If it's Glassboro or South Jersey then it would be difficult to root for them.
The "Philadelphia" aspect is a big part of why i wanted a team here. Honestly i could care less about south jersey.

Excellent point...
If a mod could add a "Only if it's named Philly" option, that'd be good.

I don't think I would be able to do it because without public transit access to the stadium I wouldn't be able to get there, and it doesn't seem to me like that exists for the Glassboro site.

That's a fair point but I would be very surprised if a PATCO line didn't spring up or the team and/or NJ Transit didn't offer gameday buses from Center City.

I don't think you have to worry too much on this front. Accessing the Philadelpha media market (and its tv viewers) is just as important as having a stadium and team in the area for MLS. If they are taking the heat for having the New York Red Bulls in Northern Jersey, where people and government are much, much more "pro Jersey", they'll fight the same fight in Glassboro.

And the Gloucester paper did say that the local State Rep was asking the state for $20 million for the sports complex. NJ State might have issues with another Jersey team calling itself "not Jersey".

NJ-3 has been on the boards for awhile now, and is in imput stage. One of the main proponents for its extension towards Glassboro is a Dr. Hasse from Rowan. Its years away from reality in terms of actually making it down to Glassboro.
I could see buses from somewhere around 8th and Market or somewhere like that.

With Jersey $4billion in the red, I just don't see how they can justify it.

It's a long time since I've been near Glassboro. I would definitely give them a sample. Continuing regular support will depend on how accessible it is from the western suburbs.
Regardless, it's got to be easier than what I do for the Meadowlands and DC now.

Hard to say; I'm moving back to Philly soon but will most likely be living on the Main Line, so it could be more than an hour's drive on the Schuylkill and through downtown Philadelphia to get to Glassboro. That's pretty inconvenient.
Not that I won't still support the team, as long as they've got Philly in the name. And not that I won't go to some games even if they don't. But I don't look forward to the drive.

I voted "no" but have since moderated my stance somewhat. I'll support the team as long as "Philadelphia" is inthe name, however if it's the "South Jersey" whatevers then no, that doesn't represent me.

I voted no...but the timing for this...I don't know. I am/was a Metrostars fan but they seem to be gone. If this team is called Jersey, I'll stick with RBNY. If it's Philly I'll think about it

Wow, you boners would rather NOT support a team within an hours drive MAX for that market, just because it might not have Philly in the name? Having a previous allegiance, I can understand. Being from another country, I could understand....but just the NAME?

Enlighten me as to why someone wouldnt want to check out games at the highest level within 30 miles of them?

I am and do...the Metrostars.
It is not 30mi, it's 40mi. From Horsham, a northern suburb, to 95 is about 30mins, 95 to a bridge, 20mins, across the bridge and into Glassboro, 30mins and that's all without traffic. If there's traffic, and there usually is, you can easily add an extra 30mins.

philly fans are known for caring about philly sports only...
once their team drops out of the play-offs or fails to make it, in any sport, interest in said sport declines markedly....
whether phiily soccer fans view glassboro as philly will be verified....
still there are tons of soccer geeks in south jersey, and I suspect enough to travel from the northern and western suburbs to make it a go
