I know nothing about Philly... but is this South Jersey Rowan location considered by Philly citizens to be a part of the Philadelphia area? Is it an easy commute? Public transit? Would the Philadelphia press follow the team like its really a part of the city?

The thing I am most intruiged about by this announcment is the amount of time the team/area will have to get it together. The past expansion situations in MLS have never had this long to market the team, build expectations etc. I think this can only help in the long run.

Also, the whole expansio v. relocation thing is really interesting. What if they don't officially decide on that until the last minute. It could definitely put some pressure on the markets without stadiums to get it together.

After years of speculation, this one is indeed a stunner........no Linc, no Bristol.

I don't know, but I lived in Philadephia for four years. This is the first time I ever heard of Glassboro, New Jersey. And looking at the map, I have a hard time imagining people from Philly's western suburbs going there. That said, I never interacted much with Jersey in those years ... except for that one day I took a wrong turn and ended up in Camden. Oh boy ...

I actually graduated from Rowan University in 2001 and I am completely stunned by these events. I know the University has been making great strides in redeveloping the town of Glassboro to turn it into more of a Univeristy town, but I never thought in a million years that this would be the direction they would take. Un-freaking-believable!!!!

It seems fairly easy to get to from Philly, I-295 (to NJ 42) to NJ 55 freeway. Not too far from the NJ Turnpike. That's what Google maps seems to show anyway.

When did they change the school's name from Glassboro State?

Ages ago when Rowan donated a shitload of money...early 90s.

I think it was around 1995-96. Basically, this really wealthy guy named Henry Rowan donated a ton of money to the school and Glassboro State changed to Rowan College. Eventually, I think around '97 they got their official University status.

I got a full "scholarship" offer to play at Rowan University. Flamethrowa, they became a University in '97, you are right. They are D3, hence the quotations around the word scholarship, because they supposedly don't exsist for D3, ahhaha Seemed like a nice area, but I turned it down so I could quit playing soccer, take up drinking, and gain 30 lbs.

CONGRATS PHILLY!!!!

I'm glad you guys got a team before any of those assbag places like oklahoma, atlanta and a few others.

Is it considered part of the Philadelphia metro area? Yes, but that doesn't equate to it being considered part of "Philly".

Commute? Depends where you're coming from, but there is a bias in the area for the South Philly sports complex.
Public Transit? Nope. There is talk of them extending one of the lines to Glassboro, but nothing's been confirmed.
Would the Philly press follow this? Nope, and to be honest, I don't think I would either.

That is closer to civilization than any midwest stadium

Why not? Would you follow a team that was in the sports complex?

Yeah, but I'm from Philadelphia proper, not some suburb. My entire life minus college and a stint abroad have been spent inside the city limits. Just like NJ has issues with teams calling themselves something else, I'd have problems with some team across the river calling themselves "Philadelphia".

And yeah, I realize that I actually sound like a jackass from Philadelphia but if they really do call this team Philadelphia, I can only imagine there's gonna be laughter and derision, because again there won't have been any knowledge of the fan base (Houston 1836 anyone?).

I fully agree.

If they called themselves "South Jersey" but marketed to Philadelphia (as well as NJ) would that help?

Call them the Cherry Hill Wiseguys. The jerseys will fly off the shelves.
