This is really more "fans" than "travel", but I'd appreciate some input from those around here.

The World Cup seems like the perfect opportunity to upgrade to an HDTV (I have a 21" monster I picked up from Target for $80 four years ago.) Obviously, my main priority is to watch soccer (as well as other sports) in HD. Other than that, I watch some regular TV shows and DVDs, but nothing crazy.

Does anybody have any recommendations? I'm thinking 32" to 37", and I have Comcast cable that can provide HD service.

Thanks for the help,
Charles

If you want a good HDTV without breaking the bank, you can't go wrong with something like a 42" LCD projection. I have a Sony KDF-42WE655 42" Grand WEGA. Excellent TV. It's over a year old now, so I doubt if that particular model is still manufactured. You can find a current model for well under $2,000.

Right now there are some 32" HD ready LCDs that can be picked for as little as $700 off the Internet.

Newer 32" HD-ready LCD models run up to $800-1,000.

And, there's more info in the linked thread.

Just bought a new Samsung 42" DLP projection set. It's flipping sweet. The sad thing is that not one soccer match has been in HD, and until HDNet shows MLS there won't be. ESPN2 doesn't show MLS, USNT, or Champions League in HD. FSC shows nothing in HD. Same for GolTV. I'm hoping the MLS ABC opener will be, and of course we get all the WC matches in HD.

Most of the games will be on ESPN2. Make sure COMCAST caries ESPN-HD and ESPN2-HD.:) I recommend getting a HD DVR.

Go with a television set that has a native resolution of 720p with and HDMI input. That essentially future proofs your tv and gives you the native resolution for HD on ESPN and ABC. As far as the tv goes, you can always pick up a buyers' guide from Sound and Vision magazine and let their results be your guide.
