I wouldn't say Duke was nothing before Coach K. They had gone to Final 4s before him (when Vic Bubas and Bill Foster were the coaches) but they were definitely down before he arrived.

Agreed, Duke was nothing before coach K. What Roy Williams did this year was very impressive though after losing what, 96% of their scoring. Roy Williams is a great coach and a great recruiter. His record with Kansas was amazing too, how would you like to try to talk someone into moving to Kansas for 4 years?
Biggest? Maybe, but questionable. The last of the glory years was 1975, over 30 years ago. They still recruit well but Arizona (in the pac-10=west coast) out recruits them hands down and has been to 22 straight tourneys including the most recent NC. If you ask me they're the biggest. UCLA, most history? Of course. Though it all came from one decade long run. History+location+facilities+recruiting base= they should be the biggest program on the West Coast. Arizona is more successful, but thats because they have Midnight Loot Olsen. UCLA has had nothing but jokers for as long as i can remember.
Eh, I wouldn't go that far. I personally think it's a more accurate reflection than the RPI. Yeah, but when they play the games, it still means nothing.
West Coast Conference, so does San Diego!Exactly!
Yes, it undoubtably makes it easier for them (though that's a long time to dominate any conference), but overall no. They've proven their worth by only getting bounced in the first round once, going to the sweet 16 3 times, and the elite 8 once- even though they were given a 9-12 seed for half their appearances.
In reality yes, Gonzaga is a small school from Washington State. But to use that statement to belittle their basketball team is misleading. I'm not belittling their team, i'm just saying that for a small school from a nothing conference, i thought the expectations of them were way too high.

as i alluded to earlier, i think the entire college basketball world is still scratching its collective head over the Harrick run in 1995 :p

i would say all the "Triangle" teams are supported well....NCState, Wake, Dook, and UNC
Dean's stats:
2 nat'l championships
13 ACC titles
8 Coach of the year titles
1 US Olympic Title (as a coach)
Under Smith, UNC won at least 20 games for 27 straight years and 30 of his final 31 seasons
Coached UNC to 11 Final Fours, second only to
UCLA and John Wooden's 12 appearances
He coached the greatest player of our lifetime - his airness
Yeah, he's overrated.
Exactly, 2 National Championships in 30 years. And one of those with Worthy and Jordan on the same team, anybody could have won with that team. His stats would be impressive if they didn't have the best talent in the country for pretty much his entire time as coach. With the players that UNC had, Dean Smith definitely underachieved.

That only makes sense if you don't look at their tournament history or who they have on their team though. They were 'The best gonzaga team ever'. Or so everyone thought.

that is completely different then your statement of dean smith being the most overrated coach ever. which is rediculous statement.
EDIT: are you saying the talent he had during the years UCLA was the shiznit was better than the Bruins? ^^^^

Harrick was a good recruiter. At least good enough to keep the homegrown talent at home. Anybody can win with the right players and a little luck. Hell, even Jim Boeheim won a National Title!

Well he was obviously a great recruiter, thats not quite the same thing as being a great coach. A great recruiter brings in great players, a great coach gets the most out of those players. Dean Smith never did that.
Edit: I don't remember the Wooden era at UCLA, but for as long as i can remember UNC pretty much had the best recruiting class about every year.

I'm going to have to ditto what James said dude...again, much love but we are definitely not going to see eye to eye on this.

Lute Olsen is a good coach and a great recruiter, Bobby Knight a great coach and a good recruiter, it takes a mixture of the two to win. Don't take my hyperbole too seriously, i'm just saying that you don't have to be a great coach to win a National Title. Jim Boeheim is not a great coach, he is a great recruiter. Does that mean he's a bad coach, no. He's good, but he definitely isn't great.

well seriously, under Anti's logic Earl Weaver is a horrible manager because he only won one World Series in his 16 years
(note - I have the orioles)
I think you get my point.

But Hey guys, i'm not trying to piss anyone off, but i am a little ornery today. What would a discussion of sports be without outrageously biased opinions?
