i am very cynical, no question. :)
however, when did you hear michigan get busted when they got the "fab 5"?
a good friend of mine is one of those 5, and he told me all about the money/car he received from the program. was that in the media? no.
the NCAA tends to let it fly under the radar. you think it was coincidence that webber/rose/howard/jackson/king all chose michigan that season? it was very well paid for. (sorry using michigan as example, i just know what went on there, despite it not being a "scandal")
it happens, and duke is just as guilty.
(i dont like duke for spare white boys PG's with "hustle")
hurley, wochicowski, paulus, collins~:p
i watch Howard play in high school. went to a game where he played Michael Finley's Proviso East team. it was awesome.

Yeah, i'm familiar with the Fab 5, everybody is. Who let you in on that little secret? Was it Chris Webber's obstruction of justice trial? WTF does that have to do with Duke? Just because some teams do that shit, don't think everybody does. There are alot of players that just want to play for a great coach and a great program.

jimmy king (friends since we played together in high school) Dude, I was being sarcastic, that shit was all over the media. It really couldn't have been more of a scandal. Why did you think it was swept under the rug?
really dont wanna get in a bitching match anti... so ill agree to disagree. Yeah, i'm sure that Bobby Hurley went to Duke cause Coach K showed up on his doorstep with a briefcase full of cash. I'm not saying these things don't happen, i just don't think they happen everywhere.

they are soooo good they produce tons of pro talent
*said with buttloads of sarcasm*
I hear people slam duke a lot for this, but it confuses me. See emoticon:
There was a graphic up in one of the 1st round games that showed the top 5 schools with the most active NBA players, it was Duke, Uconn, Arizona, UNC, and a school I can't remember, Kansas probably? Each had 10-11 active players. Because Duke is Duke should they have 20? I don't get it.

re: Duke hate, don't have much of it, but then again I don't live on the east coast. I don't have any Duke love either though. Nor UNC love, Tyler Hansbrough bugs me.
re: UCLA as underdog.. never felt that way. And I suppose they were celebrating because they were in the elite 8? Past glories yes, they've had many, but only one NC that any of us are old enough to remember (or any of their players for that matter, if they even cared when they were in fourth grade).
re: small school from Washington State.. that was ranked #5 in the final ap poll, has (had, yay) the best player in the country, has been to the tourney for 8 straight years, and where it costs $350 on ebay to get a ticket to see them play the sisters of the poor night in night out.
re: bribes and shit.. right, it probably still goes on at some level. But the late 80's/early 90's were the peak in both football and basketball. I don't think you'll ever see an era of coruption in college athletics like that again.

I recall a real old SI article about Carlos Boozer when he was still in high school (I think he was maybe a sophmore/junior) and he wanted to go to Duke. I mean, if he wanted to go then, not sure what was gonna change his mind. Afterall, anywhere's gotta be better than a place where you barely see daylight for 4 months of the year.
I'm laughing how charged up you're all getting over this. Its ridiculous.

re: Duke hate, don't have much of it, but then again I don't live on the east coast. I don't have any Duke love either though. Nor UNC love, Tyler Hansbrough bugs me. With the talent UNC has had for the past 30 or so years, the amount of championships they've won is pathetic. Dean Smith= most overrated coach ever. The fact that Duke has done as well as they have in UNC's backyard makes their achievements even more impressive.
re: UCLA as underdog.. never felt that way. And I suppose they were celebrating because they were in the elite 8? Past glories yes, they've had many, but only one NC that any of us are old enough to remember (or any of their players for that matter, if they even cared when they were in fourth grade). Has UCLA sucked lately, pretty much. Are they still the biggest Basketball school on the West Coast? Yes, and their failure to capitalize on that is their own fault.

If you go back further than 30 years I might agree with you but over the last 30 years.....the talent at UNC versus that at Duke hasn't been that different. Yeah, UNC edges it but not by a lot.
As for the backyard comment......I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Do you mean that UNC takes a lot of recruits that would otherwise go to Duke because of proximity? If not, I wouldn't think that UNC takes away any more recruits from Duke than Maryland, UConn, UK, etc., do.

this is sadly very true. by all rights we should be the top hoops AND grid school on the coast. i mean jeez, the campus is walking distance from the Playboy mansion!
but the university administration has never seemed to see athletics as a big-time priority.

I just mean that when Coach K started building the program, he did so right down the road from the Number 1 recruiting school in the country. And its only in the last 15 years that Duke has been close to being on an equal footing nationally with UNC. I wonder how many kids from the state of North Carolina have even played for Duke? I'm definitely not an expert, but off the top of my head, i can't think of any.

Agreed, Duke was nothing before coach K. What Roy Williams did this year was very impressive though after losing what, 96% of their scoring.

Biggest? Maybe, but questionable. The last of the glory years was 1975, over 30 years ago. They still recruit well but Arizona (in the pac-10=west coast) out recruits them hands down and has been to 22 straight tourneys including the most recent NC. If you ask me they're the biggest. UCLA, most history? Of course. Though it all came from one decade long run.
First, polls don't mean shit, i think we all know that.
Eh, I wouldn't go that far. I personally think it's a more accurate reflection than the RPI.
Second, 8 straight years in the tourney is a nice achievement, especially given the fact that i'm not even sure what Conference they play in.
West Coast Conference, so does San Diego!
Actually do you think that's why they're in the tourney ever year?
Yes, it undoubtably makes it easier for them (though that's a long time to dominate any conference), but overall no. They've proven their worth by only getting bounced in the first round once, going to the sweet 16 3 times, and the elite 8 once- even though they were given a 9-12 seed for half their appearances.
In reality yes, Gonzaga is a small school from Washington State. But to use that statement to belittle their basketball team is misleading.

lmao....that's probably the most rediculous statement I've ever heard. Dean Smith is a winner, a leader and he revolutionized the game of college basketball.

correct me if I'm wrong but its dook's backyard too....

correct me if I'm wrong but its dook's backyard too.... Technically yes. But everybody knows that its the big state schools that people grow up cheering for. What would you guess the ratio of Duke fans to UNC fans is in North Carolina?

i would say all the "Triangle" teams are supported well....NCState, Wake, Dook, and UNC
Dean's stats:
2 nat'l championships
13 ACC titles
8 Coach of the year titles
1 US Olympic Title (as a coach)
Under Smith, UNC won at least 20 games for 27 straight years and 30 of his final 31 seasons
Coached UNC to 11 Final Fours, second only to
UCLA and John Wooden's 12 appearances
He coached the greatest player of our lifetime - his airness
Yeah, he's overrated.
