Compared to other nations playing in Nuremberg during the WC, officials are expecting a "much smaller" number of US fans coming to the city.
This article talks about security concerns, and does have some interesting comments about WC preparations:

-------
Officials expect, for example, up to 40,000 England fans to come to Nuremberg, only a quarter of them with tickets....
As well as the English fans, some 20,000 Croats and up to 15,000 Mexicans are expected to come to Nuremberg.
The number of U.S. fans is expected to be much smaller, but security for the American players will be a major preoccupation. Ernstberger said all cities hosting U.S. games would work together on a "common security standard".

You know, I read the same article on Yahoo, and my first reaction was WTF??? There were WAY many more US fans at WC2002 than Mexican fans for starters. Many more than Portugal too! So I'm not sure what the basis of this assumption is. The US has a very large military presence in Germany as well that will come out to the games. Even w/o tix I still say we get more than Mexico. No way 15 K Miexicans travel to Nurenburg w/o Tix.

Well, they're coming from somewhere for the US game. I was unable to get a hotel room in Nuremberg for 6/21 or 6/22 & am staying in Bamberg & commuting to the game by train.

"Officials expect, for example, up to 40,000 England fans to come to Nuremberg, only a quarter of them with tickets. "
Is this typical? Are there only 10k for the fans of each side per game? That would explain the shortage.

i would guess the the 10k figure is the rough estimate for the tickets officially made available thru Fifa to fans of a particular nation (i.e. the sum of the TST tickets and the ticket sets allocated to each national association for sale to their fans directly for each game).
i'd imagine there could be many additional fans who get tickets and attend their team's games by acquiring tickets via other means -- exchanges, broker/sponsor sales, and scalped tickets.
to me it seems like the US will fill up their allocations and represent well in the stands, but the over-representation both in the stands and in the cities will be by fans from nearby (primarily UEFA) countries.
it will be interesting (and i'm not certain if there will be an official way to measure it) to see if there are more MEX, or USA, or AUS, or JPN fans at the WC. of course the home-continent countries will most likely have a favorable crowd/home-field type advantage for thier matches against non-UEFA sides.

These sorts of estimate are notoriously difficult to make, and were probably thought up by some municipal intern with too much time on his hands. Tehy could but high, they could be low, they could be spot on, but in any case it's a crap shoot.
I think they're way off on the England prediction, though.

I heard there could be as many as 200,000 England fans following the team around Germany, so the 40K estimate seems way low.

100,000 is the estimate that keeps being published, but you only have to ask yourself how they arrive at this number to know how reliable it is.
What you can be sure of is that somehow everywhere England plays the stadium will be about 80% English. I'd even bet that if they play Germany in the Second Round (very possible) that English fans could easily be in the majority. I have no idea how they do it, but somehow they do.

In hindsight, I think we're going to like Bamberg although it wasn't our first choice. We're staying at the St. Nepomuk which sounds cool. No idea what the commute to Nuremberg will be like.
We're new to Boulder so you know more about it than I do. Seems nice so far.

I think that figure is a bit inflated, but also misleading. I think it came from estimates of the number who'd travel over for some part of the competition, not the number who'd be there for the duration.
I'd guess a lot more would go out for the opening game, which is on a weekend, than the other two group games. I can easily see 30,000 being out there for the Trinidad game (in Nuremberg) and over 10,000 more for the first game in frankfurt.
As for tickets, they buy on the black market. As long as they are prepared to pay £200 or so, it doesn't seem to be a problem.

FYI, we'll be here: http://www.faessla.de/
Commute is 45 minutes - one hour, depending on type of train.
