Mods: Feel free to move to OT if you see fit.

It appears that I may be moving to San Francisco later this year, and my wife and I are beginning to scope out neighborhoods/etc. Just curious if SF folks here can recommend Arsenal-friendly (or even dominated) pubs in the Bay Area. I'll be in town for the last weekend in March, so I plan to check places out then.

Thanks for any/all suggestions.

Here's the pub we had listed for the FA Cup Final last year:

San Francisco
The Mad Dog in the Fog
530 Haight St
San Francisco, CA 94117
(415)626-7279

I can confirm this is a good place, as I actually -watched- the FA Cup final their last year.

Another place that shows games is the "Kezar Pub & Restaurant - 770 Stanyan St, San Francisco, 94117". closer to Upper Haight (mad dog is in lower haight). I think they might have the same owner as the info line for games at the mad dog always mentions if it's showing their or the Kezar.

Overall you won't get as many games as the globe or the george and dragon up here in Seattle which shows every arsenal game ppv or not. I think they only show one EPL game a week at one of the two pubs.

Didn't the Dead play in a place called Kezar Stadium? What's the significance of the name "Kezar" in the Bay Area?

Dunno.. but it's Mary K Kezar Memorial Stadium. (http://www.lightight.com/GGP/mem_images/Mem4P36.html) The pub is only a few blocks away.

No - that was Henry J. Kaiser in Oakland.

I stand corrected, they did play Kezer as well.

HighburyGoon, FYI:

In 1922, the San Francisco Park Commission accepted funds from the estate of Mary A. Kezar who left $100,000 to erect a memorial to her mother, Nancey H. Kezar, and her uncles Bartlett, John and Charles F. Doe, all pioneer residents of San Francisco. In 1925, Kezar Stadium was erected in Golden Gate Park.

The Stadium accommodated many events; Forty Niners football games, college and high school sports events, Shrine Hospital East West game, motorcycle races, track and field, rugby, soccer, Lacrosse, Donkey baseball, and auto races (in the 1930's).

Bill Graham started his "Day on the Green" series in 1973 with The Grateful Dead and Riders of the Purple Sage. The next month it was Led Zeppelin with the Tubes opening the show. In 1975 in a benefit to aid the after-school sports programs he gave a concert featuring Neil Young, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Starship, Tower of Power, Doobie Brothers, Santana and Bob Dylan.

Yea, it's the same guy. I really wish that guy would start serving coffee in the mornings.

Huh?? You'll get every game on FSC and they have the Setantata PPV matches on the weeekends. Kezar is more of a full on sports bar, but the Mad Dog will take care of your needs. If it's available on US TV, they'll show it.

In response to the original question, I don't know of any Arsenal intensive bars. Most soccer fans in the city generally hit the Mad Dog as you can watch any televised match and watch it around other interested folks.

splara10 - dude who will I meet for matches in SD? That's going to suck. Well for me, but maybe it's a good thing for you.

Best thing about San Fran is that it's rent controlled. Haight Ashbury might be a good place to watch the match, but I wouldn't suggest living over there. I have loads of friends living up there, I will ask them for some ideas of places to live.

The Dead also often played Henry J. Kaiser in the late 80’s. It was formerly known as the Oakland Civic Auditorium until 1984.

Here's a good thread on the city, albeit more geared towards tourists.

Here's the Chronicle's breakdown of the different districts/neighborhoods.

I've lived here for awhile now, so feel free to ask away.

Yes - I was just thinking off the top of my head about all the Dick's Picks I have and downloads and was thinking he meant. Henry J. Kaiseer, but then I pulled it up and saw they also played Kezer in the 70's as well.

But we love to hijack threads :)

Actually getting back on track - what is the neighborhood where the Real World was filmed by the curvy street with the flowers, I think Lombard?

Anyways, I have a friend that lives over there and it seems to be a pretty cool neighborhood.

From recent experience I disagree. I goto SF at least a couple times a year and there's been more than once they weren't showing a game that was on FSC or PPV. Last time being the 2nd weekend in December.. couldn't watch the newcastle game. And if I remember correctly (debateable) the only game they were showing at either pub that weekend was the Chelsea game.

Thanks to tundra_desert and Dave for the Dead/SF info. I just knew I recognized the name from my Dead tapes, I seem to remember some show from 73 there being particularly blazin'!

Hmmm...that sucks. I don't know the circumstances surrounding that in particular, but I've never gone there a been told they're not showing a match that's either on FSC or Setanta. It may be delayed, but they'll show it that day eventually.

I know this sounds bad, but I retired all my old tapes and have Dick's Picks 1- 36, View from the Vault 1 - IV and Dead Downloads 1-11. Kind of replaced all the old boots with thise official ones. Great quality sound.
