Hannover vs Nürnberg 4-2
Idrissou opened the game with a clean hattrick on Hannover’s first three chances within just fifteen minutes (9’, 21’, 24’). Bobic replacement and Casey rival Kaufman assisted the first two goals. Junior answered for Nürnberg after 31’. At halftime Hannover’s Popescu came in for his first game in Germany. Just eight minutes after the break Ciric cared for suspension with closing the gap to one goal, but further eight minutes later he was ejected (yellow-red). Nürnberg was close to the equaliser, but Daniel Stefulj decided the game twenty minutes before the end with his first Bundesliga goal after a great assist by Stajner.
Rostock vs Cottbus 0-0
Rostock was superior, but also unable to create bigger chances, while Cottbus didn’t have a single scene in the offence. After the break it was the same picture except that Hansa had better chances now. Cottbus’ first offence scene was after 65 minutes. In the 85th Rostock’s Rade Prica was ejected (red) after a brutal foul, a fate that basically must have been shared by Berhalter for fouling as last player.
Kaiserslautern vs Mönchengladbach 2-0
The only coaching change of this season happened after this game in the first season half when Andreas Brehme was replaced by Eric Gerets. For Gladbach Mikael Forssell had his debut, but Kaiserslautern had the first chance when Klose was stopped with a foul in the box by Stiel – but the whistle remained silent. The whistle did not remain silent when Forssell scored a great goal as another Gladbach player was seen in an active offside position, but the replays clearly showed that goalie Wiese did not even realise this player. After all the excitement one goal counted by Knavs (29’), basically the only chance that was not stopped by the ref in the first half. Directly after the break Gladbach’s Korell was ejected for whatever – the ref wanted to have seen a foul, but if there was one, then by Kaiserslautern’s Mifsud and definitely there was nothing even nearly being worth a yellow card. And to add one scene to the disgraceful performance of the ref: he whistled pk for Kaiserslautern in the 88th when Teber tripped over his own feet – Klose scored. As always in this season Gladbach lost the game when being down 0-1.
Bochum vs Leverkusen 2-1
Both new players started for Leverkusen, Cris as central defender and Kaluzny as defensive mid. Bayer was the superior team in a first half without lots of action. After the break the game was open with many chances. Bochum scored by Hashemian directly after Placente had to be substituted with broken nose (in the first already Juan had to be substituted with injury). Unlike in other games of the season Leverkusen did not collapse after the goal and was able to equalise by Babic (78’). Leverkusen made pressure to score the game winner and ran into a counter attack finished by Hashemian again (84’). This goal probably means Toppmöller’s end in Leverkusen; the loss today was not too bitter as the team played in a way that you could say ‘okay, they lost, but it was not deserved and it could have been a different result’ – problem is the combination of the last games. Bayer now has four straight losses and just one win in the last eight games (five points). Tomorrow and Monday Bayer scheduled crisis meetings. Obvious is that there was no confession to the coach, neither by Calmund, nor by the players who were directly asked whether they want to go on with Toppmöller. Toppmöller himself complained about “lacking support by the officials in a little crisis” – obviously he doesn’t realise that in other clubs he’d be out since two months.
Wolfsburg vs Bielefeld 2-0
Wolfsburg was superior and had some chances, mainly after free kicks. That way also the lead by Schnoor happened after an Effenberg free kick (24’). After the break Maric increased the lead with a nice shot lifting the ball over Hain from 17m half left distance. Bielefeld gave up very early and allowed Wolfsburg too easily get rid off the Volkswagen Arena curse.
Bremen vs 1860 1-2
Striker change in Bremen, both substitutes started, who scored the four goals during the week against 1860 in the cup – this meant that top striker Ailton had to wait on the bench. Werder started great, had chance after chance, but missed them all - very similar to the cup game. With the 8th big chance Klasnic scored the more than deserved with a great bicycle kick in the 44th. Justice was undone in the 53rd when Lauth used a further horrible goalie mistake of Borel to equalise. This shocked Werder and 30 seconds later 1860 hit the post. They recovered though and in the last ten minutes both had enough chances to win, with Werder’s Baumann hitting the post – but it was Borimirov scoring the lead for 1860 in the 82’. Bremen just collected one point in 2003 so far and is about to lose the Champions League spot.
Berlin vs Schalke 4-2
Best quality of today’s games. Mpenza scored Schalke’s lead with a counter attack already in the first minute. Hertha made pressure and was rewarded with Preetz’ equaliser in the 28’ before Alves even scored the lead with a very nice goal after 39’. After the break an own goal by Matellan increased the score to 3-1 (51’). Despite of Varela’s ejection (61’) Schalke did not give up and came closer in the 69’ by Oude Kamphuis. Berlin wasted many great counter attacking chances, but Marcelinho put the trembling to an end in the 88’.
