I've never seen that photo before. Is that what Argentines call that photo, El Abrazo del Alma?
Yep. It was taken by a famous photographer of the magazine, El Grafico.

At the time, I hated this team with such passion because of all the talent that oozed out from the players.
Possibly the greatest side to have not won a European Cup final, wearing arguably the best looking kits ever made.

When I was really little I saw that team beat Aston Villa in the old European Cup at Villa Park - 2-1. We'd only just got into the Holte End when the game kicked off and 5 touches later Paolo Rossi scored a header after some excellent play from Bettega. Mind you, man of the match was Boniek who was superb (according to my dad).

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with you. Brazil 70, is "non plus ultra." The combination of players, the maturity of a seasoned Pele, the way they meshed and samba'd their way up the field like they were playing a pick up game, barefoot on the beaches of Ipanema or Copacabana, loose and fluid......the goals they scored...........ahhhhhhhh.......o' jogador quem intenta facer o dribling, precisa saber que e sempre ele quem toma la initiativa, um giro, uma parada, um balanceo, um arranque explosivo, toda coisa va facer la finta efectiva (excuse me for my poor Brazilian grammar - I left when I was six.......) They were all exceptional - Jairzinho, Rivelino, Tostao, Alberto Carlos, was rare amongst diamonds. We can argue all day about the merits of Kafu, or Socrates, or Roberto Carlos (check him out on youtube, man oh man that guy has a late breaking curve ball on his free kicks, that is what is called "an educated left foot!" unbelievable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgpbQYwPrvs), and start naming your favorites from great European sides, like the Clockwork Orange(s) of 74 and 78, or from great clubs of yore, e.g. Bobby Moore on the English sides of 66 and 70, etc. etc. ........but as a team, as a team?..............Brazil 70, non plus ultra.
Hmmmmmm. I reckon that the following sides would have beaten them if not playing in the blazing sun. England in 1970 (almost did if it wasn't for Jeff "club foot" Astle), Holland from 1974, Real Madrid in the era of Gento, Puskas, Di Stefo etc. I also reckon that there were a few German national sides that would have beaten them, plus the Brazil side of Socrates, Falcao etc.

Uwe Seeler during halftime when England was about to cheat their way to their WC. :D
Cheat? I don't call using a military band to arrest a German striker at half time on the charge of being bald "cheating". How dare you sir!

The great players have a certain 'silhouette', a certain posture as
they handle the ball, run, score a goal.
I think it would be nice to have a thread for such images, a thread
capturing these classic images of great players. I don't mean their
goal celebrations, I mean their unique playing demeanors, caught
in media res, on the field.
I'll start with Maradona, and I hope others will add more photos. It is
not easy to find the perfectly iconic image though.
Maradona:
This is pure Diego for me: the chest swollen in pride, the stocky figure,
the look of wild concentration, bursting forward, ball ready to be played
with the left foot.
This also is pure Diego

And for all the sorrow and disappointment of that day, two great, great legends of football whose legacy is more than their medals, championships, etc. Baggio and Baresi, along with Maldini, embody the best of Italian football. Class, humility, and grace in victory or defeat. When I think of Baggio in '94, I barely remember the final. What sticks in my mind is how he lifted the team against Nigeria and Bulgaria. I wish all three could play forever.

Serriously, the picture was forever remembered as the defeat of West Germany in 1966. However, pople did not know the photo was taken at half-time(because the band did not play after the game). No one for sure knew what Seeler was doing.
