It’s been more than 30 years since Mario Puzo wrote his blockbuster novel “The Godfather” — selling 20 million copies and giving birth to some of the most memorable characters in modern fiction and film. Wow. Mark Winegardner is one of my favorite authors. I probably would not have had any interest in this book otherwise, but you can bet I'll buy it when it's released.

"Crooked River Burning" is definitely worth checking out. If you're interested in baseball, I'd also recommend his book "The Veracruz Blues."

The funny thing is that the Godfather is universally recognized as a trashy, poorly written novel. So what kind of "contest" did this guy win, exactly? Most cliches on a page? Most simplistic plot twists? Least convincing dialogue?
