So it begins. The FA says they'll interview all candidates, and they've started with Curbishley, which means he's in the running.

haven't the FA already stated that the next manager will be british, thus making what hiddink is up to rather irrelevant?

No. They said they'd prefer it. The problem is the options are limited:

McClaren is a part of this oft questioned management team and despite having a respectable kitty has lead his team to the verge of relegation this year.

Big Sam is a miracle worker with a small budget and players that honestly no one else really wants, but the question that haunts people is how would he get on with the Becks, Owens, and Gerrards of the world?

Curbishley has a knack for turning promising seasons into disapointments and he managed to run the most influential player of their early season run (Murphy) out of Charlton. He thrives on picking off of the Premiership scrap (Thomas, M. Bent, and Smertin for example) heap, again how would he cope with a team of world class players?

The most interesting is O'Neill IMO. But the argument of "English vs. British" quickly crops up while he has been out of the game for a year and obviously he's more familiar with Scottish football then the English variety.

I personally think Curbishley would be an awful choice. What really needs to happen is managers like Curbishley and McClaren need to earn themselves chances at squads like Newcastle, which they haven't done yet.

Regardless of what the FA have said, I still think that it should be the best manager appointed. We got unlucky with the appointment of Sven, and there was no way we could tell that he would have off the field problems 3-4 years into his reign. Despite that, he has one of (if not the) best competitive records as England boss with only around 3 losses in competitive games. If we can find another manager with the pedigree of Sven and without the personal issues, I'm all for appointing him - and at this point in time, which other manager is (seemingly) available that fits the bill?

Squads like Newcastle's? Newcastle are massively overrated. Boumsong is not a world class player. McClaren and Curbishley both finished ABOVE Newcastle last year, what do they have to prove?

well i think all sensible people hope the best manager for the job should be selected, and i think we all pretty much know that would mean appointing someone who isn't english, or british for that matter.

however, it seems likely, not least with the noises coming out of the mouth of dave richards, that the next manager will be british.

god help us.

All we need is someone respectable (not necessarily English/British) to declare an interest in the job and it throws it wide open...

The biggest step from Bolton, Charlton, and Boro to the likes of Newcastle isn't in the quality of play. Its in the pressure brought by the expectations and the star egos which have to be juggled. Obviously it would be preferable to be looking for English managers from Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal as a reasonable promotion to the National Team; but that doesn't look likely any time soon.

Newcastle, despite their underachieving and poor transfer history, are the only team with the resources to challenge those top 3 consistently (although Tottenham are quickly approaching that level).
