venezuela has really improved during the last WCQ in Conmebol and has removed the perennial basement tag from their team. I would rather have us face a team like Peru with more accomplished attacking players. Venezuela has a decent goalie in Dudamel and #10 in Juan Manuel Rey (i think that's his name).

I would like the USSF try to pull a big team into Cleveland to develop more interest in the Midwest especially since the midwest doesn't get many games (I know Columbus used to get games but with the HDC and PHP as similar yet newer small SSS I think Columbus will get less games).

I could only see Venezuela coming here because a majority of their players play in South America or Mexico and coming to the US wouldn't be a big deal like teams who have a lot of euro players. Either way a game is a game and I'd rather have Venezuela than no one at all.

Well, Venezuela are not as strong as Morrocco, but better than Latvia...

The possibilities of a non-world cup South American side bringing a B or C team is pretty high, as there are no important competitions coming up to prepare for.

Any European side, in prepartions for Euro 2008 qualifiying, would probably be better, aside from the true minnows. Latvia is actually a pretty decent choice. Someone like Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Finland or even Albania, Belarus, Georgia type (not knowing their schedules) would be much better than Ven.

seems like arena just wants a few patsies to give his guys a decent work-out...

3 matches in a condensed period...

arena can play everyone...

get the final 23 in a good mental framework going to germany...

on the whole...

canada
norway
japan
guatemala
poland
germany
jamaica
morroco
venezuela
latvia

is NOT the greatest of squads....this might be the weakest schedule usa has played in a long time...

the big question is whetherv arena has scheduled this weakly on purpose, or whether ussf couldn't reach agreement with bigger named foes

Brazil would not be playing us right any time this year once the groups were announced. It is very feasible that we could face them in the 2nd round so it wouldn't happen

This is a mistake. We have to play against european teams.Remember WC is in Germany and european teams will play better soccer there than they did in Korean. My choice is Romania,Slovakia or Bulgaria and african team Nigeria,Cameroon,Senagal,South Africa,Ivory Coast or Angola.;)

The US most likely to play Brasil in the second round...

Per FIFA website:

Croatia (CRO) : Romania (ROU)

Friendly 2006 28.05.2006

No location, but I don't understand this fixture if Romania is supposedly playing the that tournament in LA and Chicago. I think Romania is definitely out of the question.

it appears poland and germany are the euro quotient...

it seems to me, arena is valuing getting the squad to have 3 fairly safe matches, where players will play well, feel good, and go to germany in a positive mindset...

also, do well against 3 middling sides, the espn's of the world hype the results and the casual sports fan might watch more world cup in june

Maybe we plan on actually playing in the next Copa America in Venezuela and this is part of a peace offering between the two soccer federations.

Bush and Chavez are two sides of the same pompous, fear-mongering, dictatorial coin. Let's hope the sport can see past these idiots--it's much bigger than they are.

Seems obvious that the starters will play against Morroco and Latvia (to simulate our opponents), while the reserves will play the middle match against Venezuela. So that means that it doesn't really matter who the opponent is that much.

Sorry, but I really don't buy the argument that Latvia "simulates" the Czech Republic, the disparity in team strengths is just too great. The CONCACAF equivalent (by my calculation, based on past results) would be to play St. Kitts and Nevis in order to simulate playing against the USA.

Yea good point. But perhaps that why the Vene's would play harder to try and beat us, but then again, they may just injure our players. It would be nice to beat them at this time though, but I don't know if I'll chance it.
