I know this is not popular, but it's the best thing England could do.

I don't think Gerrard should start. He CONSTANTLY gives away possession. He's the biggest flaw in the England team. He gets excited and tries to thread impossible passes, basically what he does for Liverpool but from deeper, and it just doesn't work at the international level. He pretty much single handedly gave away the game against Portugal.

I'm tired of people thinking Becks is awful. He didn't play well against Arsenal but I've seen him be the only reason that Real Madrid wins games this year time and again. If anything see how Becks is playing and think about SWP on the right.

Gerrard off the bench if we're behind and Lampard gets tired of chasing the game.

Soooo ... let me get this straight. You think Gerrard is the weakest link in the England team ... and you wish people would stop criticising Beckham's performances.

OK. Right.

I think we're done here, to be honest.

I know, I'm standing by for flames

But I'm right. I'm not saying he's not a good player but Gerrard is not the same player for England as he is for club. In the England set up, the best team would be to leave him out. We desperately need a holder that won't give the ball away from deep.

Objectively speaking, he is a liability, especially when we're chasing the game. He just can't control himself and turns the ball over with overambitious passing. I'm sure if he were played forward it might be a different story, but him and Lampard on the same pitch doesn't work, and Lampard is much more careful with the ball. Gerrard's best game recently for England was when he was moved to left back and forced to play smarter.

Of course I don't expect a scous supporter to see anything the man does as wrong.

And I don't expect a Yank newbie to know anything about football until he or she proves otherwise. Especially one that can't even spell "Scouse". So we're both right where we need to be here then, aren't we?

You've taken several separate arguments (holding midfielders, best central pairing), interlocked them with a dreadful perception of the game (Steven Gerrard is a "liability", Gerrard is in the team to "play deep"), added a soupcon of factual inaccuracy (Gerrard played right-back, not left-back against Argentina) and a logical fallacy (Gerrard a liability, Beckham a misunderstood genius) and come up with one big, fat steaming turd of a post. Good work!

You've seen, at a guess, two England games in your entire life and you thought you'd take that reservoir of insight and expertise for a spin on the ol' Interweb. S'OK - we see it all the time here.

But I'm right.

Arf ... no. Nor will you be, for some time, by the look of things.

Gerarrd is a wonderful player, comfortably the best midfielder in the squad and only Rooney surpasses him in pure ability.

He has just been a victim of the system. When he gets a chance at 100% fitness to play as a central attacking midfielder with a d-mid behind him then he will shine. Not having Beckham or the other wide midfielder cutting inside all the time would help as well.

yes meant to say right back - so it'll make your day to know you got me.

and like i said, you're faith has been insulted - obviously hence the ad hominum vitriol - you have a religious view on it and reason is pointless.

we can pick this up after england play again and we see how many balls Gerrard gives away.

and to help with your spelling ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scouse :D

Maybe Gerrard's passes don't reach other players because your positioning is awfull? Just a thought.

Don't flatter yourself - I'm the most dispassionate evaluator of Liverpool's players that you will find on these boards. I know precisely what are Gerrards genuine weaknesses and will discuss them at length and without prejudice with anyone worthy of my time. Reason is the key principle here - that's why I object to interjections from people devoid of it.

What I can't abide is people flaunting their ignorance in this manner. If you don't know what you're talking about, why not just observe, read and learn? Then contribute an opinion when you have one worthy of us regulars here?

Not much to ask, is it? Basic manners, really.

The substance of your argument, for want of a less inappropriate phrase, has now been dismissed out of hand by three English football fans. Seven posts in and I say again:

I think we're done here, to be honest.

I actually think Gerrard is stronger on the flanks, but given license to roam, than he is centrally, where I think Lampard is better suited to play. That being said, unless Rafa finds time to rest him, he may be a liability at the WC, through no fault of his own.

dropping gerrard would be point blank retarded...go run into a blunt knife for suggesting something so stupid.

Woah, settle down there francis.

Putting the best 10 players on the pitch doesn't make the best team. For me it's Lampard that gets the nod.

I might be new to this board but I'm not ignorant. What do you want me to learn from you? How to be jingoistic, classless loser that needs to get a life so they don't feel so threatened? I think it's you that's confused mate.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Case dismissed, methinks.

Pity really - for a moment there it looked as though he had taken the much needed advice and decided to sit, read and learn.

That's the thing with today's newbie football fan ... can't trip over themselves for falling down. :D

But as mod of this forum, I'm sure you'll find it less funny when this abberation causes our spastic little chum to return, full of the vim of idiocy and dumb chance.

Dropping gerrard wouldnt be wise .
I think he can deliver the goods if beckham is dropped...
or if beckham actually rediscovers his discipline.

I'll close it if he does.

I do find it somewhat funny though ;)
