and also vice versa.

the world cup is a showcase that can make or break players.

some successful club players also have successful WC - (beckenbauer, pele, baggio, breitner, maradona etc.)

for whatever the reasons are, some have excellent club careers but had lackluster WC's, or never went or played in one (hugo sanchez, van basten)

some had some awesome WC perfomrances , btu have not played at that level for their clubs (the only one i can think of right now is el hadji diouf.)

any others?

Second category: Anyone from crappy football nations - Giggs, Hughes, Rush, Weah, Best, Hansen, Dalglish, Johnston, ...

Third category: Anyone from crappy football nations* - Diouf, Diao, Fadiga, Nakata, Wanchope, Reina, Donovan etc.

*just being at a World Cup counts as an achievement, the players themselves are nothing special.

best example that comes to mind is Seedorf. Has won the CL with 3 different clubs, but on WC's always ended up on the bench. This year, the NT coach will not select him

1) for whatever the reasons are, some have excellent club careers but had lackluster WC's, or never went or played in one (hugo sanchez, van basten)

Liverpool has many such players. Hansen, Souness and Dalgish played for the great Liverpool team of the 1980s. They failed in the WC Finals. Keegan also had a miserable 20 minutes at WC 1982. Barnes did not do too well either. Others.... Boban, Savicevic, Franciscoli and Vialli all failed to deliever in the World Cup. Henry and Rai each won a WC, but they did not do much.

Di Stefano is chief among these, and you could probably say the same for a host of spanish Real Maadrid and Barcleona players.

probably me.

diouf was nothing special, but liverpool bought him for a reason after WC 2002.

but he was african player of the year twice....

he the was the closest example of a player who responded in a WC but hasn't done as well with his club.

Ian Wright - although his strike rate for England wasn't too bad.

Roy Keane deserves a mention. One of Man United's best players ever, and right up their in terms of great captains, too. Despite his incredible successes with Man United at club level, he only appeared at one World Cup in 1994 under Jack Charlton (whose longball approach bypassed the midfield). Roy Keane of 1994 was also not a great player, but Roy Keane off 1998-2002 was probably the best box-to-box CM of his generation, during which time he literally dragged the Republic of Ireland on his shoulders to the World Cup. Unfortunately due to a huge fallout between he & then-manager Mick McCarthy, Keane infamously was kicked out of the World Cup team. Ireland went on suprise most with their spirited performances, just leaving us all wondering... what if?

He said that Diouf fell into the third catagory:

Salenko. Anyone even remember that guy?

Most of the Golden boot winners at WC Finals are very bad too.
