View Full Version : Where will the goals come from?

I keep trying to imagine what our best chances of scoring goals are in the World Cup.
As far as forwards, I am worried that they all will be marked out of the game with the exception of McBride maybe getting on the end of a Lewis or Convey cross. The rest just don't seem that dangerous.
Midfield seems like a more likey source during open play. The speed and skill of Donovan, Beasely, Convey should see them through for some chances.
Free Kicks. I really don't know. Not even sure who would be taking them. I know that Convey takes a lot of mid to long range free kicks for Reading. Lewis does the same. Do we have anyone who is extremely dangerous from around 20-25 yards out for a shot on goal?
Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated.

The goals will come from the manafactuers that make them. Im sure they will be of high quality because this will be a decent sized, decently televised sporting event.

Goals can and hopefully will come from everywhere. I would be surprised if less than 3 players score in this WC and any single player nets more than two goals.

Thats what I said in a thread on the Group E board.
No matter who scores the most goals in the group, no one will have more than 2. You can attribute that to the GKs of the group. Goals will come at a premium this time around.
That said, With this group, for the US it will all be about the midfield. The other teams have VERY strong midfields. So if we want goals it will be based on them.

in the group stages, the goals scored by the US will come from the following sources in the following totals:
Donovan (3)
McBride (1)
Twellman or Dempsey (1)
Beasley or Convey (1)
Cherundolo or Onyewu (1)
generally speaking, the goals will come from about 3-15 yards out.
if the US can score about 2 more goals than they conceed over the course of the 3 first round games, I'm very confident they will be able to advance.

Exactly, this is International soccer. I am expecting final scores to look mostly like 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-0, etc. Nothing more than 3-3 or 3-2. Want proof, look at the most recent friendlies.

Johnson has yet to start the MLS season, and he could score in the WC.
O'Brien scored the first goal vs Portugal, and should he return to play for The Hague, well then he might score in Germany.
Long set shots? Maybe Cherundolo, Reyna, Donovan, or Lewis. Who knows? since Mathis is gone (sigh). Mastroeni might try.

that's about what my program says too. johnson might grab one if he's feeling tip-top.
free kicks that are shots on goal should be taken by dolo, donovan, lewis, and convey. they're all good enough to hit something dangerous.
free kicks that are passed should be taken by basically the same people + maybe beasley or reyna if they're in fine form. donovan is [I]usually[I] better at them than reyna, IMO. donovan isn't bad in the air, actually, and he's so quick that i wouldn't mind having him in the box on free kicks to knock home a loose ball.

Do we have guys that are capable of scoring? Hell yeah.
McBride can score on anyone, given his versatility. You might have him totally marked out of a game, then he slips through onto the end of a cross.
Donovan can score at any time. Same with Beasley.
Dempsey? He's another one who might do nothing all game. Except score a gutty header.
Twellman may not be a perfect international forward, but his record over the past few games is nothing to scoff at.
And by May, Johnson could find his touch.
Lewis will have chances.
Gooch will have chances.
Reyna will have chances.
Convey and Wolff have not had a scoring touch for the US lately, but they create chances.
I'm not really worried about it.

I'm a lot more worried about who is going to WIN the free kicks than who is going to take them.
We've got guys who can kick a sitting ball--the rarer talent is forcing the foul in dangerous spots on the field.

Does anyone in the world suffer more fouls than Beasley or Dempsey?

Rep to Bajuro, that's exactly what I thought.

The Quadrennial question...
Beasley, Donovan, McBride, Dempsey, Twellman, and Wolff if we make it out of the group stage.
Otherwise Dempsey and McBride.

This is a good question
I think LD will score
McHead will have 1or 2
We need either Twellman or EJ to step up and score

I'd have Lewis and Convey take the free kicks. Donovan's Free kicks have mostly been crap lately. Cheruldolo could take some too (right foot).
McBride will score and hopefully Johnson will have found more of a touch after playing regularly in MLS.
Our midfield has a lot of scoring options. We have some big guys to get up front on free kicks in the box, also.

Talking about Convey and Lewis, are they Premiership Players for the next season ?
