haven't seen this elsewhere. mods, please delete if it's been posted.

from my recording of the show:
"it was announced wednesday that the united states would play host to a pre world cup tournament from may 21st to the 29th between teams from romania, colombia, uruguay, and northern ireland. a tournament schedule has yet to be announced but romania announced their involvement this week, saying they will play one game in los angeles and two in chicago."

i assume this means the u.s. is the fifth team? is latvia one of the tournament teams? u.s. supposedly plays them on the 28th.

According to this thread, the US is only hosting the tournament-- and Latvia isn't one of the teams...

It is clear, our country is hosting a soccer tournament between the four teams listed in the initial post. The USMNT is not involved in the tournament.

I guess this is USSF trying to revive the US Cup. We haven't had that mini tournament in a few years. It used to be annual didn't it? The most memorable for me had to be the one where we beat the shite out of South Africa 4-0 (Cobi with 2 goals) then got a lucky draw against Ireland, then beat the Tri-Pumas and their Maradona wann be look alike coach, Hugo Sanchez. I believe the goals were McBride, Heyduk, and the Razov during one of ABC's stupid graphics.

NBlue's explanation seems infinitely more plausible. It is not unheard of for teams to come to the US and play each other (and not the US). I'm guessing this is simply the latest example of that.

Four teams not playing in the World Cup take an end of season training vacation to the US and play a little tournament. Until I read otherwise, that’s all this is.

The thing that pisses me off is that all 4 of those teams (with the POSSIBLE exception of NI) are better than Latvia.

Northern Ireland is superior to Latvia, IMO. They are a decent side with some talented players.

I was wondering the other day about what happened to the US Cup. I think the problem is that CONCACAF is so backwards. The Gold Cup is sometimes held every three years...wait two...no one, ah I don't even know anymore. All I know is they had a tourney in 02, than 03, than 05. Personally, I believe that the US Cup could be revived as an annual tourney, that is played during the winter MLS nat' training camp. They could have some decent nations whose leagues do not play in winter.
