This is music related, so I put it here instead of in B&M:
Okay, so there's been alot of jockeying for position and general stupidity in the Atlanta radio market, so I just thought I would vent:
First, I am not ashamed to admit I listen to Lite Rock stations on occasion...Peach 94.9 was the best because you could always hear guys like Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor, Bill Withers, etc. on there...That station was an Atlanta institution...Now, the jackasses at Clear Channel have changed the station's name to Lite 94.9...I guess because they think listeners are idiots and can't figure out for themselves what kind of music the station plays. I predicted at the moment they made the switch, that they would use the lame "Turn on the Lite" slogan...so predictable...I am surprised they have turned 96.7 the Buzz to Alternative 96.7 yet.
I have to compliment Clear Channel in one way though...Last week, Cox decided to put the ki-bosh on another radio mainstay Fox 97 (or Oldies 97 if you speak Clear Channel), and switched to an urban format. I guess they figure being th 5th or 6th urban station in Atlanta will get them much better ratings than being the only Oldies station. I also guess they figure all the 16-24 year old kids that now listen to their station will have far more money to spend with their advertisers than all those 40-65 year old suburbanites that used to. Idiots
Back to Clear Channel, they have chosen to make their classic rock station, which is actually called Mix 105 (and not Retro 105 or Classic 105), to an oldies station to fill that gap...good move on their part, since they were fighting a losing battle with Z93. I am sure it will be Oldies 105... :(
My biggest beef is with 99X, which has taken a dip in the ratings, since everyone else apparently feels like me. How many times are they going to make themselves look retarded by dropping the "New Rock 99X" slogan on us, and then follow it up with "Plush" by STP for the 8th time that day?? That station used to have balls, now they just go for the easy out. I am sure they creamed their pants when they heard Chris Cornell was hooking up with members of Rage, when Billy Corgan came out with a new band, and when Nirvana released a new single...it was like 1994 to them all over again. If you listen to them, you would think the Chili Peppers are the most cutting edge thing since the Velvet Underground. They really need to get some people under the age of 40 to run their music department...and their morning show now belongs an Adult Contemporary station. Can I get some real new rock on there? And I don't mean Nu Metal or punk, I mean White Stripes, Hives, Vines, Strokes, Queens of the Stoneage, even Coldplay. Beck came out with a new album this year, and 99X didn't play one thing off of it...probably because they think it is too soft for them now or something...
Feel free to add your own rant...but please, don't just turn this into a "Clear Channel sucks", or an "I only listen to Album 88" party...
