Why are they renaming the teams? And who is naming them? The names are all crap!

I'll give you one guess for the NY team.

The Houston team was originally named Houston 1836 after the year the city was founded. However, this was also the year of the Independence of Texas from Mexico and the Mexican-Americans got their panties in a twist over it. So to appease the local fanbase, the name was changed. Stupid IMO, but in this PC world and considering business, the name had to be changed to put fans in the stands.

Well I guess the Red Bull is pretty self explanatory but thanks for the Houston info. We don't get much MLS coverage in the south-no team anywhere near us.....

alright, didn't know if you had season tickets or something!

quite comical names in the MLS now.

Real Salt Lake (there are spaniards in Utah, and the Spanish Royalty gave a royal seal to name the team)
FC Dallas (is this france, spain, or italy? how about Dallas FC)
Houston Dynamo (march on comrades)
Red Bull New York (just plain old funny)

The first 3 I don't really have a problem with. Using european naming schemes is better than using typically American animal based names, IMO. I always wonder why nobody throws DC United in there as well if the euro names are a problem.

I agree though that Red Bull New York though is plain awful.

well, it is DC United and not United DC.

i have no problem with FC Dallas, it is just that we speak English here in America and there are teams in England with FC in their name and the FC is at the end, so it should be Dallas FC.

Does the language thing really matter though? If so, Real Salt Lake needs to be changed to Royal Salt Lake. Its just names.

it just gets on my nerves, and gives people who hate on the MLS more fodder for their cannons.

and i'm doing the Big Soccer music draft. two picks down:

Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Stree
Flecktones - Live Art

I have a feeling the draft is going to be reduced to a "i know more indie and obscure bans then you and your picks suck" kind of thing.

Warning: Gripe/Rant ahead!

As of this morning I must decide whether or not to remain a fan of MLS. Red Bull New York/New York Red Bulls? Was it that easy for the league to whore themselves out? If so, then IMO all the good will they've built up with the new digs and attempts to appeal to the true soccer fan... just flew out the window on those Red Bull wings. Even if I remain a fan of the league, I must now root for this team to fail miserably and pray every minute that a similar act never happens again! And no general sports enthusiast will give the league anymore credibility or attention knowing this is how little the league takes the branding issue, establishing how far apart MLS clubs are from the status awarded the Yankees, Red Wings and even the Clippers. It's one thing for Arsenal to trade sponsors, another all together to trade their very identity, and still another to base that identity on a corporate shilling. Will Red Bull be bought out and leave the fans(sic) cheering for the New York Reebok or some other sponsor? :(

*sigh* Thank you, MLS for delfating my high. Is it any wonder college sports are becoming more popular than the pros? :o

Just got this email:

Welcome to Red Bull New York

* Red Bull New York press release »
* Get 2006 Red Bulls Tickets »

Red Bull New York logoRed Bull Company Limited, the Austrian company that produces the world's leading energy drink, today finalized an agreement to purchase the MetroStars of Major League Soccer and partner with AEG on the construction of the team's soccer-specific stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. With the purchase, the team will be re-branded as "Red Bull New York", including a new logo, uniforms and team colors to take effect immediately. A video greeting from General Manager Alexi Lalas can be found on the team's new home page.

Red Bull's agreement with AEG, the team's former investor-operator, was approved by the MLS Board of Governors today, and includes the two companies joining together to invest in the custom-built stadium for the team in Harrison. As part of the agreement, Red Bull also purchased naming rights to the soccer-specific stadium. Red Bull will have a 50 percent ownership stake in the facility, and AEG will remain responsible for constructing, managing and booking the venue.

"The addition of Red Bull into our group of owners is a landmark moment for Major League Soccer and for all Tri-State area soccer fans," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. "Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz brings international credibility and proven, innovative marketing expertise to Major League Soccer. His presence on the MLS Board of Governors provides another authentic, avid soccer fan to our diversifying set of investors."

Red Bull New York's team emblem, unveiled today on www.newyorkredbulls.com, features two bulls charging toward a soccer ball. The team opens its 2006 campaign on Sunday, April 2 against D.C. United at RFK Stadium (5 p.m. ET). The team's home opener at Giants Stadium is Saturday, April 8 against the New England Revolution (7:30 p.m.). The Red Bull New York uniforms will be unveiled soon.

With Red Bull's eastern regional offices located in Hoboken, N.J., its commitment to the metropolitan New York area team suits both the company and Major League Soccer. In recent years, Red Bull has increased its investment in professional sports, including NASCAR, extreme sports and Formula One auto racing. In professional soccer, it has transformed Red Bull Salzburg into one of Austria's leading first division clubs by signing impact players and using innovative marketing to increase attendance.

I don't know, if it means they're gonna serve Red Bull and Vodka at the matches it could actually be pretty fun. All they would need to do then is play at night under black lights, and get some topless cheerleaders, and i'd be there. ;)
