Ice, heat, and elevation after the inital swelling goes down, if you start to heat it raight after the pull more blood will seep into the strain causing a longer healing process.
I am no doctor but i have had my fair share of these type of injuries, so i kinda know what i am talking about but if it doesn't go away in the near future go see a Dr. and get their advice

Just remember "RICE" for muscle pulls:
R - Rest (stay off it)
I - Ice (keep it cool to reduce swelling)
C - Compression (wrap it to prevent swelling)
E - Elevation (keeping it raised also helps prevent inflammation -- preferably above the level of your heart)
Heat is good if you need to relax a muscle that's tensed up and painful, but it also promotes swelling.

Best advice that one can give/recieve in this case.
