Who is truely the fastest US player?
I still believe it is Eddie Johnson, then Damarcus Beasley. Donovan and Justin Mapp (yeah, really raises the credibility of this thread by bringing him in the discussion) are faster on the ball, which is more important in soccer.
I also think Cory Gibbs and Marwell Wynne are in consideration as well, because Wynne ran a 21.87 in the 200, and if i struggle to break 23, that is some fast s--- right there anywhere. (Robert Carlos ran 10.5 in the 100, so he may be a little faster than Wynne)
So, in order, I believe it is.
1. Johnson
2. Wynne (when he gets on the national team)
3. Beasley
4. Gibbs and Ugo Ihemelu are tied for the fourth spot
5. Donovan
On the outside barely
Jeff Cunningham, Bobby Convey, Justin Mapp, Oguchi Onewyu, Josh Wolfe.

Heath Pearce is supposedly the fastest sprinter in the NT pool. I think I remember hearing about an absolutely sick 100m time, something like 10.6.

slowest:
Pope
Berhalter
Bocanegra
Reyna
Mastroeni

That list of the slowest is only by reputation. Pope is still relatively fast for a center back, it's just that he's not as fast as he used to be. Berhalter is probably the slowest in the pool. (When he played for the USMNT, Casey was, but he obviously hasn't gotten a call-up since his injury.) Bocanegra is actually still one of our faster defenders. Mastroeni is quite athletic as well. I'd list Ralston among the slowest national team players.

Yeah, how I forget those two fast wing backs. And Cherundolo is not that slow either, so, he has consideration as well. And how i forget about Eddie Pope, my goodness gracious.
okay, reorder
1.Johnson
2. Pearce
3.Wynne
4. Beasley
5.Gibbs/Ihemelu/Eddie Pope
Just missed out.
Cunny, Bobby C, Gooch, Franke "the Machine" Hedjuk, and "Jason" Wolfe

Boca is not that slow. He would beat McBribe and Twellman in a foot race, that is for sure.

that's not that fast for National level high school kids. Even Upper State level.

Found this on Pearce, which I think says 10.85 in 100m. That's meters, not yards.

100 meter world record as of June 2005 was 9.77 secs.
Here are the top U.S. times for 2005. http://www.usatf.org/statistics/topMarks/2005/outdoorTF/men.asp
It looks like the top college guys are in the low 10s.
You won't make the Olympic team at 10.85, but that's still pretty dang fast.
My money would be on DMB, until I see otherwise.

Appoo.........10.6 is very, very fast. There are less than 20 highschool kids in the entire nation that can run under a 10.6

I know Utah isn't a very populous state (34th or something like that), but the state high school record is 10.62. It's not world class, but if you're as fast as the fastest high school sprinter in the history of a state, it qualifies as very fast IMHO.
I'd bet there are a couple in the NT pool who could beat that, though. I remember hearing LD was the fastest on th NT. I think that was befor EJ came onto the scene.

from what I remembered, a 10.8 translates to around a 4.7 40.
A lot of these football kids, like Teddy Ginn and Reggie Bush, could have been Olympic Sprinters if thats what they concentrated on, and I would imagine the same is true of some of our soccer players. Footballl was always my favorite sport, and If some of thise guys are 4.4, 4.3 kids, then so are Donovan, Beasley, Eddie Johnson. Even Gooch is around a 4.6 I would think. He can MOVE from what I saw against Poland.

Which is what those NFL football players timed at 4.3, 4.4 actually run if you time them electronically and eliminate the faked-up rolling starts.
Don't kid yourself, 10.8 in the 100 meters is rip-roaring fast. We had a kid from my high school who ran 10.8 in 100 meters, and we had another kid who had a 13 year career as an outside linebacker in the NFL. The first kid blew the second kid out of the water in a short race, it wasn't even close.

they don't run a rolling start at the NFL combine I don't think. The way you get times is that the electronic time goes off the instant the runner leaves the blocks.
I was talking about my own experiences btw. I ran track in highschool (not that well mind you) and I was at districts from my area where one kid ran a 10.8 to win the gold for our district. In the 40, he ran around a 4.7, 4.6.
I've been to about 85 - 90% of the Penn State home football games since 1998 - season ticket holder for 5 of those years, I've seen these kids run. I know the difference between the kid I saw run the 10.8, and say Derrick Williams.
EDIT-
and I've seen our National team players to, and I couldn't tell you who would win a 50M race between Derrick Williams and Landon Donovan. Those 2, Andre Jonson when he played for Miiami, and Tedd Ginn are the fastest athletes I've ever seen in my life.

The 40 is a different animal from the 100. You can't assume that every 10.8 runner is going to run a 4.7 40. Some accelerate later or can maintain their speed longer making them comparatively better 100 runners than 40 runners. The converse can also be true, making a sprinter better at the 40 than the 100.
Any way you slice it, a 10.8 is fast.
