I'm going to London next week, and was hoping you guys could hip me to anything new in town record store-wise. Last year your advice was excellent, and I came home loaded with great stuff and broke.
I'm also the proud owner of a new region-free portable DVD player, so any advice on good DVD deals would be appreciated, too.

there are tons of good stores around Tottenham Ct. Road. The area between Oxford street and Leicester sqare is good.... around Soho.

Not much happening on the DVD front I'm afraid, there are a couple of discount stores at the top of Tottenham Court Road but they're not exactly selling French expressionist cinema.
Judging by your Ricky Gervais icon you'll be wanting The Office on DVD if you don't already have it and 24 Hour party people has just been released which is obviously essential.
It's not very inspiring but my advice is to check the chains for DVD's.
Koobla on Berwick Street is still the best place to go for Leftfield electonica IMO although there is a new store called vinyl junkies selling dance stuff a little further down. I've not found anything about it to inspire me though.
For a trip somewhere slightly different go to Wood Street in Walthamstow where they have a covered market with about 20 dealers selling Old vinyl. The Victoria line will take you to Blackhorse Road and it's a walk or bus from there. It's called the collectors centre and it'll be reassuringly tourist free. You won't have to pay West End prices either.
That or send me an off line E mail if you fancy a beer.
Cheers

I'm assuming you've done the Notting Hill, West London Rough Trade records etc trip which is a must. If not let me know.

Thanks Col...that's the stuff I was looking for. You steered me right last year, so I'll take your advice again.
Last year I had a ball at the Rough Trade at Neal's Yard, and hope to hit that hard again.
I just finished watching a borrowed copy of The Office 1st season, but I'll pick up a copy for my library for sure. 24 Hr Party People was US$14.99 it's first week of release here, with a free New Order remix cd! Don't think I'm gonna beat that over there...
Thanks for the beer offer, but Mrs. Footix is travelling with me, and since she's kind enough to let me breakaway and hit the record stores (and go see the Fulham v Burnley FA Cup match with me), I'm gonna keep the carousing to a minimum. Next time for sure!

Footix, pick up a copy of the region 2 edition of 24 Hr. Party People. It has extras not available on the region 1 DVD.
Also, if you have a chance, check out this band called Actual Size. They're playing 2/10 at Water Rats in Kings Cross. They're gonna be F-ing huge! (Think Radiohead with a greater pop sensibility.) See 'em before they play in the States!

I didn't know about the extra extras on the 24 Hr Party People Disc, thanks! I really enjoyed the Tony Wilson commentary on the Region 1...he's definately a mad genius.
I'm not flying in until Wednesday night, so I'll miss your band, but I'll watch out for them...are they friends of yours?

Kind of. I heard their record on British radio and I was really impressed, so I wrote to them. I've been chatting with them and their manager off and on for a little while now.

The only thing I can recomend is the Virgin MegaStore. Maybe they got a Wiz or Sam Goody there too.

I guess hijacking threads is a good way to get to 14K posts... :(
