Just saw this in the "Breaking News Section" on UEFA's site. Only a blurb about how it's the last game before the WC for the US. Discuss.

Really, disappointed I be. Latvia have some good players, but this is a dropoff form playing Holland four years ago.

Gotta say, sort of a buzz kill from a fan perspective, but they are a decent side.

I will be there.

My guess is that Holland's busy. Just a guess. :)

But to the point, we got really really lucky to get Holland last time around. Teams that good don't normally miss the WC. Thus we have to fight the other WC teams for the second and third tier teams. Could have been worse. Could have been Panama, Peru or Iceland.

This is no doubt because of the massive Latvian community in Connecticut.

You all realize they made Euro 2004 and played quite well, right?

Where did you see this? I couldn't find it on uefa.com, ussoccer.com, or fifa.com.

I happen to think a confidence building game against an unfamiliar opponent will be a positive thing right before the cup...especially for players currently struggling for form (cough, Beasley).

Besides, it gives us a chance to promote US-Latvian relations, and that's never a bad thing.

Edit: If I recall, didn't Latvia qualify for EURO 2004?

Yes...it was Latvia whom it took a couple late goals from a seriously in-form Czech Republic team to beat.

Latvia set American test
Tuesday, 7 March 2006

Latvia have agreed to play FIFA World Cup finalists United States in an international friendly on 28 May. The match will take place in Connecticut and be the US's last game before they travel to Germany for the summer finals. Latvia are also considering playing Norway in August.

They also tied Germany 0-0. I don't remember the other result off the top of my head, but make no mistake, they aren't patsies. It continuously amazes me how people dismiss international competition on this site. Almost every game is difficult. France, post '98, had a tough time beating the Faroes and/or Andorra at home for chrissakes. International football is competitive. Nearly every game is a fight.
