And also at the bottom, David Beckham can't do simple 2 + 2

I give him a lot of approbation for admitting it, but boy, that is some embarrssing s---.

Conrad and Pope over Gibbs. Purleeez.

At least he admits his forward linup is weak.

And.

This could be the real bugaboo for the U.S. In the past five or six years, we've developed some world class players in goal, on defense and in the middle of the park.

Say what???

Better get used to that one, and there are only 7 games left in ADO's regular season, so Gibbs better get his butt on the field soon.

The guy doesn't add much insight...

And EJ just went 79 minutes in the very game he talked about at the beginning of the article, unless he comes down with another injury, I'd say he's back to health -- just in need of a return to form.

close but no cigar...

don't think 5 central defenders will go...

and pick a 4th outside back..either albright, spector or dunivant...to be determined...

suspect gibbs getting healthy would prevent conrad from making the roster....

"I think it was maths, actually. It's done totally differently to what I was teached when I was at school, and you know, I was like, 'Oh my God, I can't do this'.

Other than the Conrad call, this article should be titled: Least Controversial 23-man Roster for USMNT in Germany.

gibbs has no weight, doesn't play and was dumped like a fat girl the day after by feyenoord

conrad has size, is great in the box on set pieces and is really coming into his own

two players going different directions

i'd probably take conrad over gibbs

and i'd probably take pope over gibbs

sentimental thoughts will kill you

But has Conrad shut down Rudd Van nistelrooy yet?

Don't discredit Gibbs yet and give great praise to Conrad.

Conrad's done well in B-side friendlies, but to say that he's ahead of Gibbs if things are equal is laughable.... If Gibbs can get back to form, theres no question that he goes...

Totally agreed

Also head scratching is Zavagin is still in there. He is more alternate than in the finally 23

The Beckham piece is hilarious.

Indeed it is. I couldn't stop laughing while reading that article.

And, as another poster mentioned in this thread, Betchel doesn't really have much to say. It's a typical roster that most people have posted themselves on BigSoccer.

teams aren't picked based on the past

they are picked based on the present

Exactly.

I guess we're to assume that Betchel would have Oneywu and Boca starting in the middle (since he seems to list the players in order), with Pope, Berhalter, and Conrad to back them up... leaving only three outside backs? So his only reserve outside back would be Hedjuk. Nice.

When will America get some intelligent mainstream commentary on this sport?

Anyone who reads these boards (especially this forum) could have written that article - lurk the boards, regurgitate the conventional wisdom, and voila! An article on the likely 23-man roster for the World Cup.

The Beckham article is more proof why a lot of rich athletes/celebrities end up broke.

What 4 d-mids would you take, then?

Reyna (finally playing club ball again)
O'Brien (injured, but I'd take him if he healed up by late April)
Mastroeni

Zavagnin (all that's left in the cupboard)
???

O'brien, Mastroeni,Reyna, Clark.

Is Clark for the other three to use as a toothpick after meals?

Seriously, I really like Clark's play, and am excited about his future... but... I don't think that his future at the international level is as a d-mid. The man almost got his leg snapped in half training in Spain. Is he even going to be ready in the next month or two?
