I would like to recommend people who are going to Germany for World Cup to visit Bavaria.
In Bavaria you will find everything : nice countryside, historic and romantic cities, perfect soccer atmosphere, beautiful mountains, many interesting places, of course good german beer. Have a look at this web-site.
By the way for people that are going to stay in Germany with kids, I can only recommend to do few day trips in Bavaria. It is worth of this. I grew up in Bavaria, near München.

I like especially Oberbayern - Upper Bavaria:

Thanks for the links, bltleo. I'll be in Munich June 8-11 and would like to take a daytrip out of town on the 10th. What is your number one-recommended daytrip from Munich. I would love to get in some light hiking if possible.
Thanks again.....

Salzburg. Ever wanted to see where it was that every fairy tale you heard as a child was set? That's pretty much Salzburg.

Bavaria is the Texas of Germany... big state in the south that thinks it's its own country, politically conservative, funny accents, country music, their own "traditional" style of clothes,.... ;)
Btw, I was an exchange student in Nürnberg 10 years ago and am happily going back this summer for US-Ghana!

I also recommend the Bavarian region. It is probably the best place in Germany that I've been to, and I've lived here for a year and a half, to see the traditional German culture, castles, and countryside. On top of that, if you like to drink beer and have a good time this is THE BEST spot, possibly in the world, to do it. The beer is fantastic and people are friendly. I'd recommend Bavaria to anyone.

Huh. And all this time I thought it was Heidelberg. Another childhood myth shattered.

I don't mean that literally--it's more like "Salzburg's what you think of when you think picturesque European town." If you've got the time to spare in your travel plans, don't miss it.

Regensberg is great too! Southeast of Nurmberg and northeast of Munich (~45 min. drive). Plus the brewery at the Weltenberg monastery is a great side trip; a walk up the Danube, through the woods, over the old Roman earthworks, a quick boat trip across a narrow bend in the Danube (in small thin boats), and then the best beer in the world! I wish I was going but no tix and a decided lack of $. If I had to pick a place to stay, Regensberg would be it. Great medieval city center too!

I will be staying with friends in Freising (home of the world's oldest operating brewery) just north of Munich. I've been to Regensburg and can highly recommend it. Also, something you might not think of is the Bavarian Wood in the mountains on the Czech border. It's a lot like the Black Forest, except fewer foreign tourists. The local people seem to like that area for a quick getaway. If you want a deeply moving experience, the camp at Dachau is right outside Munich.
Of course, a great alternative is America's Little Bavaria right here in mid-Michigan. www.frankenmuth.org We don't have the Alps, but we have plenty of Bavarians, sausage and beer, as well as the world's largest Christmas store.

We'll be in Prien am Chiemsee 6/14-15.
I know about Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee castle. Has anyone gone up to Kampenwand (http://www.kampenwand.de/) for hiking?
Also, has anyone climbed the stairs to the top of the Muenster in Ulm?
