Brazilians this year include:
-Santos, National Champions
-Corinthians, Copa do Brasil winners
-Grêmio, ???
-Paysandu, ???
For those of you unfamiliar with Paysandu, they're a rather small team from the Northern state of Pará. Up there, they are a dominant force, but on the national spectrum, they often flirt back and forth with Brasileirão (national championship) Div. 1 status.

Gremio went in because was third in Brasileiro after Santos and Corinthians (Corinthians classified twice). Paysandu won the Champions Cup.
...

After the game with América, Santos, and Robinho in particular, had standing ovation from América's fans...

Ahhh...the beauty of Brazilian Football...wouldn't it seem more logical to have the runner-up from the Copa do Brasil and Brasileirão?

They are attempting to give more importance to the campeonatos estaduais, the state championships, by holding a tournement in which all the State Champions play for a Libertadores spot. The State games are fast losing importance in Brazil, but they are a tradition that is hard to see go away.

Corinthians would've just qualified three times if they used the state championship. Muh haha!!

Not really. The sate and regional champions have to play the Champions Cup. That is the one that Paysandu won.
