Anyone else here gonna watch this show (http://www.oscar.com/)? I plan to, even though this is one of those years in which I've neither seen nor really care about any of the nominated pictures (at least not in the Best Picture category).

Of course, it's always been easier for me to get pumped up for the Oscars when I've actually seen and am rooting for a film(s) to win (the last one thus far was for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King two years ago ;) ), but at least this'll be the first Oscars that I'll be watching in true 16:9 HD. Last year's Oscars was the first big event I watched after the Comcast HD-DVR became available in my area in in mid-February 2005, but I still watched that one on a non-HD TV (hooked up via S-video cable).

In any case, who do you all think will win each category? Heck, you do you think was the best post-Johnny Carson Oscar host in the last 25 years or so (for me, it's easily Billy Crystal, though Steve Martin did a good job too in his two stints as the host)?

I LOVE the Oscars...always have a few friends over for a friendly competition. Although many of the films have not been seen, we vote anyway and it really spices up the evening. Its amazing how worked up you can get - kinda like the horse races when the only betting strategy is on the "coolest name".We are really looking forward to Jon Stewart as host. The Daily Show is "must see T.V. " at my house!

So, some picks:
Best Movie: Brokeback (how can a gay cowboy movie that made $$$ not win?)
Actor: P.S. Hoffman in Capote (spot on performance)
Actress: Kiera Knightley (she was a better Elizabeth Bennet than Reese was as June Carter Cash)
Supporting Actor: Matt Dillon (went from repulsive to sympathetic in less than 6 scenes)
Supporting actress:Michelle Williams (the best performance in the flick)
Director: Ang Lee
Documentary Feature: This is the toughest category to pick:
The Penguin movie was so CUTE, Grizzly Man was so SICK, ENRON was the most INFURIATING, Murderball was so UPLIFTING. I hope the Enron movie takes it so more people see it. You can Netflix it today!
Finally, Foreign Film: Joyeux Noel strictly for the SOCCER!

Now that I think about it, while I haven't seen any of the nominated films in the Best Picture category, I've been meaning to see Good Night, and Good Luck (http://www.oscars.com/nominees/bestpicturenominee4.html) for quite a while now.

So I guess that'll be the picture I'll be rooting for (even though it probably won't win :( ). :)

I could care less about the nominees or the awards themselves. The only vaguely Oscars-related question that matters these days: Will Scarlett Johansson be there?

Meaning that you do care to some extent.

Crash (http://www.oscars.com/nominees/bestpicturenominee3.html), the only film nominated in this year's Best Picture category that I haven't even heard of around this time last week, won the category.

Go figure...

This is my opinion which belongs to me and begins now.

My opinion is that the Best Actor/Actress category should not go to actors who play actual human beings (like Truman Capote or June Carter). It's too easy to play someone that actually existed because you have a blueprint to work from. I think actors who create a character are much more worthy.

Except, of course, David Straithairn as Edward R. Murrow, but I digress.

So, if Rosanne Barr were to play "Lassie?"

Crash is really an amazing movie, it brought out so many truths to racial tensions in society, it was just an absolutly amazing script

So...Haing Ngor should not have won the best supporting actor for "The Killing Fields" because he didn't act, he just reprised his life as a Cambodian refugee?

Same goes for John Malkovich in "Being John Malkovich?"

Correct. John Malkovich wasn't "acting"...he was just "being". How can you give him an Oscar for "being"?

Always wondered why Sean Penn didn't win for Jeff Spicoli: can't play yourself?

And, um, Keira and, um, Sasha...yeah. The new generation has arrived.:D

Okay, I guess it is in good taste for the hostess to lose the competition, but did I have to lose it so badly? I won 6 out of 24 categories! A new low. The champagne cocktails lightened my mood, though!

I personally think it has to be harder to play someone who the collective audience recognizes than to create a new character. That was my argument against Reese, she was too cutie pie Reese to be a much tougher June.

Crash was a big disappointment. Predicatble script, no likable characters...

I'm glad Oscar season is over so I can concentrate on the lead-up to WC '06!
