Thanks for this. I signed it. Let's hope ESPN doesn't mar the WC for us by continuing to use O'Brien. he just doesn't know the game well enough. If they continue to go with him he better spend the next few months watching Fox Soccer Channel and learning the game and how to call it. They do it right...and there are American announcers on that station.

And watch out or they'll give him MLS Cup, too.

For the uniformed, who does ESPN currently have on their broadcasts?

Are there a certain pair for US games. They advertise that all the games will be broadcast, so I imagine that they will need a good amount of boradcasters for the Group Stage.

last time the teams for the world cup were:

1. Edwards-Keough

2. Mike Hill-Tommy Smyth

3. somebody and Seamus Malinn ???

4. Glenn Davis and Giorgio??? (or was it Shep Messing?)

Definitely not sure about all of these.

This time around I would expect:

1. O'Brien and Balboa (seems set in stone)

2. Derek from Scotland and Tommy from Ireland

3. Mike Hill and ????

4. maybe the guy from WFAN who called some MLS games last year?

I think JP or Glenn Davis would be good again, but I'm guessing they will be tied up with MLS gigs. Whomever suggested them forgets that those teams are not shutting down.

It's the World Cup. you have to hear Tommy Smyth's "Sublime" during the tournament.

In fact he pulled out an "Orgasmic" during a Real Madrid game last month. How can you not love that!

Who is that Irishman that ESPN has that commentated on the Real Madrid vs. Arsenal game? He was good, cept he couldn't say "th".

It would be massive if we could get Martin Taylor or John Motson.

Did anyone else notice that 'Nick Geber' of Fox Football Friday was the 4th petitioner on the list?

That's actually how I heard about this petition...World Soccer Daily sends me an e-mail. I haven't actually heard O'Brien's commentary because I've been in a bar or restaurant for every US game this year. I'll have to hear it before I sign it.

I agree. I think he's a decent guy...he just doesn't know soccer. You can't blame him for wanting to broadcast the World Cup. I'd have to blame ESPN for letting him. I understand they're trying to attract other people to the game/broadcast...but at least make O'brien study the game and study other good soccer PBP guys so that he gets the terminology right and understands the finer points of the game.

I started a thread on the Revs board when WSD mentioned it initially (Mar 1).

The announcers are (although still rumor until anything official is announced):

Dellacamera, O'Brian, Stone, Shep Messing (MSG), and Glen Davis. Adrian Healey may also get a few games.
