Dustcowpoke: You fail to understand that we are talking about the final ball and the need for it to be accurate. Which Pennant didn't do. He can run around all he wants but if there is no end product then he does not deserve to be on the pitch. Which is the bloody point. And he should have finished the chance he had.

Jermaine Pennant 6
Justified surprise selection with busy display but final ball not accurate enough
http://football.guardian.co.uk/championsleague200607/story/0,,2086863,00.html
In the beginning the tactic looked good for Liverpool, a steady supply to Pennant giving Benítez's side opportunities as he ran Jankulovski - poorly protected by Seedorf - towards his own goal. This gave Liverpool the edge but they were unable to capitalise, failing to create clear-cut chances because Pennant's final ball was often erratic.

If Jermaine Pennant and Bolo Zenden were postmen in your district, you'd wake up every morning to find parcels in your shrubbery and letters strewn all over your lawn: that's how bad their delivery is. Both had ample opportunity in the first half to exploit Milan's narrowness, but both failed miserably to turn time and space into tangible success, their crosses either too wild or too feeble.

I think the description of "erratic" is over the top and is probably a scapegoat for an overall poor performance in the final third. When Pennant played for Birmingham he was their best player and his crosses were the best I had ever seen but they all bounced off of Heskey's useless head.
He's done well for Liverpool if you can recall his outstanding goal versus Chelsea and his superb crosses against numerous opponents. The only reason he doesn't see more time is because Benitez has a fetish with playing Gerrard out of position.
Not only did he have the one chance on goal he did provide some great service and one of his crosses fell nicely to Gerrard but he failed to put it on target off the volley.

Pennant was poor when it mattered. If his crosses for Birmingham are the best you have ever seen I suggest that you watch a lot more football.

Matt Taylor has scored some outstanding goals this season and there isn't a lot of people wanting him called up.
He doesn't play more because Gerrard playing out of position is a better player than Pennant.
Not only did he have the one chance on goal he did provide some great service and one of his crosses fell nicely to Gerrard but he failed to put it on target off the volley.
He should have finished that chance.
So your evidence that he should play for England consists of one cross and a missed chance?

At this moment in time Pennant is a squad player at the very best.

Oh I see where the bad blood is coming from. Pennant was a playboy and now people don't like him because of it.
Continue to pick Phil Neville I'm sure he will win a lot of games for you.

If you define a playboy as driving drunk, whilst being banned, and then wrapping your car around a lamppost and giving a false name to the police then sure.
Mong the younger and Pennant don't play the same position you septic muppet. Unless you are proposing to that Pennant should play full back, in which case you are an ever bigger retard than I thought.
Please run along back to the spazzo forums.

WTF? I've never talked to you orange or posted in the Tottenham boards. Quit talking out of your ********ing ass.
BTW Placid no I wasn't suggesting Pennant playing fullback I'm just pointing out that the manager continues to pick his favorites instead of players who are in good form at the moment. England would be top of the group if the manager actually picked the right players and used the right lineup.

False.
McClaren needs to shoot himself before England can do well. And I don't mean shooting himself in the foot, which is a regular occurance for him.

But you bleat on about Pennant who is not in good form and is not good enough to play for England.
Mong the younger, as much as I don't like him, is there to do a job and can cover a few positions. Which is handy to have on the bench.
Pennant is not good enough to displace the other right wingers.
Humour me:
What team would you pick? This i cannot wait to see.

I would pick:
------------Owen---Rooney---------
Cole-------Gerrard--Hargreaves-Beckham
A. Cole---Ferdinand--Terry-----Richards
----------------Foster-----------------
Bench:
J. Pennant

Given that his crosses rarely got past the first defender, that's unlikely.
Can't say I was impressed with Pennant. Not only was his first half crossing generally hopeless, he completely disappeared from the game in the second.
I'm with Placid on this one. Pennant had a spectacular matchup against basically a LWB playing out of position at LB. Sure, he made some good moves, but he never provided service to a player where you stood up and yelled "HE SHOULD HAVE FINISHED THAT".
That is the defenition of good service undone by poor finishing. In the case of Pennant it was a bunch of cute moves with inaccurate crosses into danger areas.
A lot of crosses to nowhere = No end product.
Completely agree. I have no idea why he was rated so postively in the CL Final ..

Pennant has been in good form recently. He played well against Milan and Chelsea in recent matches and has improved his form significantly since Christmas. He is certainly in contention of an England call up in such form. He just needs to maintain it next season.
Becks is apparently playing well currently and so will likely play against Brazil. SWP does not play frequently enough to display consistent good form which is a shame for him. Lennon also looks an exciting player.
Pennant has performed enough to be in the frame for a callup. However he should not expect one. He is still below the likes of Lennon, Gerrard and now Becks again in the pecking order for that RW slot but has moved up to contend with SWP. Pennant should just knuckle down and work hard to improve and continue playing well. He is evidently a confidence player and as such he has great confidence currently. From relegation to the CL final in one year is a big step and if he remains at Liverpool he will be hopfully more composed in future big finals.

Based on form this season Bentley is miles ahead of Pennant. I'd also say in quality but he isn't a pure winger.

Bentley has put himself in the frame also. I have not seen enough of him to comment on his comparison to Pennant or others. It is clear that he has had a good season at Ewood and for U-21s. He also should not expect a call up though and should keep on working hard and he will enhance his chances of a Cap.
