I think Ridge Mahoney needs an atlas. In the USA Today article he counts Brazil as one of our "European Opponents". hhm.

I believe he's referring to a Confederations Cup match the US played in 2003 in Lyon, France against Brazil. (We lost 1-0.)

Maybe he thinks Brazil is still under Portuguese rule.

Nah. Portugal inconsequential. He's going old school: back to when Brazil was under Spanish rule when Portugal and Spain were united in the 16-17th centuries, b4 Catalunya revolted and distracted the Spanish crown and its troops, leaving Portugal wide-open to declare its independence.

Catalunya's still pissed about that, btw. (This is partly why Real Madrid-Barca is so huge.) Damn. If it had only been reversed: Portugal rebels, Catalunya gets its liberty. [/SIGH] ;)

So... I guess if FC Barca invests in MLS, we can be assured that the club won't be named FC X-City 1641.

Shouldn't the Catalans just "get over it"? :D [/history lesson]

MEXICO The match between Club América and Chivas on Sunday evening in Guadalajara, which Chivas won, 1-0, drew the highest rating for a soccer game in the United States that did not involve national teams. The match had a 1.5 overnight rating among viewers 18 to 49, according to medialifemagazine.com (http://medialifemagazine.com/). The two previous high ratings were for the M.L.S. championship matches in 1997 and 1998.

Maybe he's taking into account the fact that all of Brasilian national team players are with European clubs (or were when we played against them on European soil)? (Are there any other non-European countries like that? Argentina has few players from Argentine league.)

Maybe I'm overanalyzing simple incompetence of the USA today editor?
