How does HS overtime work? Are there golden goal/kicks from the mark?

Each state is free to decide how to deal with games tied in regulation. In Iowa, both boys and girls play up to two 10 minute golden goal overtime periods. If still tied after overtime. The boys do PKs; the girls do a shootout, similar to the old MLS shootout but starting from the top of the 22 yard arc.

Back in the dark ages of high school soccer, when I donned the purple and white kit of Boston Latin School, the soccer gods of Massachusetts had some rather interesting concepts to break ties.

1) Two overtime periods (played both out to completion)

2) Is still tied, two more full overtime periods......but the goalkeepers were no longer allowed to use their hands.

3) If still tied, the team sho had taken the most corner kicks over the course of the game was determined the winner.

4) If still tied, coin toss.

Michigan is two 15 minute overtimes(this exceeds the NFHS Max standard)........Followed by PKs ONLY for those games requireing a result.....many regular season games will result in a tie.

Here (south-central PA) we play up to 20 minutes of golden-goal overtime (teams switch halves at the 10-minute mark). That's the maximum allowed by NFHS. In the regular season, the game would end in a tie at that point.

In post-season play, we then add another 10 minutes of golden-goal OT (switch halves after 5). If still tied, we go to kicks-from-the-mark.

In Louisiana

one Full 10 minute OT, second Full 10 minute OT, then shots from the penalty mark.

In Indiana, no overtimes during the regular season.

There's a big tournament in Bloomington that uses a single 7 minute OT period, golden goal, then PK's.

In the state tournament, I think it's a 2 x 5 minute OT (not golden goal, the full 10 is always played) and then PK's if still tied. Since I don't work the state tournament because my son's still in HS, I'm not 100% on that.

Grey,

In Michigan, I believe it actually varies by conference. In some conferences, regular season games end in a tie. However, in other conferences such as the SWAC and the Wolverine in SW lower Mich, conference matches will play OT and then do PKs to determine a winner in all matches -- not just the conference tournament.

Correct and further still, some conferences up here in the north only play the OT and call a draw if nothing at the end with no PKs......gotta love the ole michigan individual freedoms obsessions.
